Spiritualism actually started after WWI. The losses of the English were so shocking and devastating that someone came up with the idea of it, somewhat to compensate psychologically for the loss of so many men. The English didn't understand in the beginning of the war that the Germans had machine guns, and had 20,000 casualties in a single day. When the reports came in, they couldn't believe it - the numbers were too high - but it was true. The Spiritualists provided psychological comfort to the families of the dead by giving them a reason to believe that they were OK in an afterlife. It is not Wicca or Paganism, nor is it Buddhism.

A spiritualist draws their understanding of God and the universe we live in from their own personal connection to there true nature as spirit. Jesus told us that the kingdom of the father is within us. This is one of the few bible verses that was intended to be taken literally. It is through this internal connection to the creator that the true spiritualist takes his direction.

Mose people who don't or can't do this see it as a false belief system.

They often say that it is something that the person is making up as they go.

Typical human response, If I can't do it it can't be done.

Spiritualism is the belief that we can communicate with the dead through mediums. A spiritualist is someone who holds that belief and may or may not act as a medium.
