I spent alot of money on a Caribbean cruise and don't have alot of money for extra-curricular activities such as going to the club or enjoying margaritas at the beach.. Is it possible to avoid detection and bring your own?

I think each line is unique in their policies, but on NCL, Carnival and RCL, I have been able to bring a few bottles of liqueur in my carry-on while boarding the ship.

In addition, I was just on the Carnival Inspiration in May and when I came back from a day in Mexico, I had a bottle of Tequila in my carry on, which went through the X-ray machine, and no one said anything to me about it.

They say you should not and can not do this, but in the past 3 years, I have cruised 5 times, and never been stopped or even had a word said to me about this.

When we went on our cruise, they did not allow you to bring alcohol on the ship. Here's what we did to get around paying the high prices on the ship for drinks. After you get out ot sea, the ship will open the duty free shops. Booze is really cheap there. Normally, you can't leave with your drinks, unless you offer to pay the duty charge.. When we went, the duty was a flat $9 fee, no matter how many bottles you purchased. We went in with another couple and bought about 6 botlles of Cruzan rum (at $5 a bottle) and 2 bottles of Kaluha (I think it was 2/$20), paid the extra $9 and took it all back to our room. When you're ready for a drink. call room service and ask for cranberry, pineapple, or orange juice, or milk / half & half and they'll bring it right to you - no charge.

Have a great cruise and drink up!

Ah! We just went through the same thing!! From what I hear, you can bring your own alcohol secretly in a plastic water bottle. Put vodka in a water bottle, and if you can find a plastic iced tea bottle, use that for brown stuff like rum or whatever (or be smart and use white rum, white tequila etc). I don't know how closely they check cos we didn't do it. I remember a friend of mine telling me that her father, who did this, was asked to take a swig from each bottle and had to keep a straight face as he took 3 shots at 8:30 in the morning.

The alcohol is stupidly expensive on a cruise!!! You can take your chances I guess... but just be careful, and don't be suprised if you don't make it.

Last time I went on a cruise was several years ago and you probably could get away with the water bottle scam. I wonder with the latest terrorist plot if you can still take water bottles on a cruise?

has it been done? sure. have people been caught? yeap. have people gotten away with it? yeap.

Just keep in mind that the chances of you being able to take any smuggled alchohol off the ship during a port call are pretty slim.. they DO check your bags for such things as well as food, as these items are NOT permitted off the ship due to Agricultural laws.

If you put it in your checked luggage, maybe it will be ok.
