it really all depends on the type of car, i.e import or domestic. it also depends on how the person drove it, where they drove it, and how they kept up with the routine maintance. for domestics i would have to say 50,000-75,000 miles is your best bet, but i would shade closer to the 50,000 mark. on an import, i.e toyota 4runner or nissan pathfinder, 65,000-90,000 will suit you rather well, again leaning towards the side of 65,000.

10,000 to 12,000 miles per year, average is "low mileage" and therefore, not "beat to pis*" as we like to say in the 'hood.
and if they try to tell you "but it's highway miles", yeah ROIGHT! miles is miles, no matter if it's 200,000 "highway" miles or 200,000 "cowpath miles"
check for leaks, esp in the back AND the front ends, and put it in 4 wheel and drive it on the highway for the test drive in both 2 and 4 wheel.
And don't ever answer the question "well how much in monthly payments are you looking for".
