Have your vet check him. He may need to have his teeth cleaned. Using bones or even brushing will not get rid of the problem if he has a lot of tartar on his teeth.

I would never recommend Greenies. We pulled them from our shelves last year after there were reports that even though dogs were chewing them, the pieces of the product were not dissolving. Dogs ended up having surgery because of obstructions. It has nothing to do with supervision of the dogs while they were eating them. I called the company myself. The company recommends certain sizes for certain dogs. However, our vets felt it was too much of a risk. You can't tell your dog to chew the appropriate size bone in tiny pieces or they might have a problem. The product itself does not dissolve. It's advertised as an EDIBLE product. It's not like giving your dog a stuffed toy or a rubber bone that you think he might chew pieces off of and get lodged somewhere. This is just one website I found covering Greenies. The second story about Burt the dachshund was especially heart wrenching.

There is always a choking risk with any chew product, i.e. raw hides, pig ears, etc. Not all the stories involve choking. I personally wouldn't take the risk, but you can draw your own conclusions.

If your pet is to the point where you smell bad breath- he needs his teeth professionally cleaned by a veterinarian. The treats and the brushing the teeth at home will only help to retard further formation of plaque and tartar on the teeth- only a professional cleaning will get what is already on there off. Schedule a visit to your vet and ask for a dental check. They will then tell you that he does need his teeth cleaned and go over the normal procedure. Over 85% of pets over the age of 2 have dental disease. Bad teeth can harm the entire body- what you are smelling is bacteria. That bacteria is getting into your pets system and wreaking havoc with his heart, kidney, livers- all of his organs. We have had dogs die due to bad teeth- it damages the liver so much that go into liver failure. Bad teeth are not something to mess around with. Good luck- make sure your vet discusses dental home care. Once you get all of that stuff out of his mouth- you want to keep it out as long as possible.

You can brush its teeth but since he's so small and his mouth is so little it can be quite difficult. Have you tried buying mints for dogs? They carry that at Petco and Petsmart called Yip Yap. Or, there's a solution that they also carry which works very good and I believe its by Petkin. Petkin also carries dental wipes which are easy to use too. But if none helps, you might have to ask your vet for some solutions... maybe you might have to brush his teeth. Btw... does he eat human food? If he does you might want to buy the solution and mix it in his water bowl... unless you can wipe his teeth for him before bedtime. Also, is he at the stage where he's changing to his adult teeth? If so, be aware that some teeth actually don't fall out so easily and could rot (like my dog's). But get him some raw hide that should work. Good Luck! =)

First of all, check your dog's teeth. If they are really dirty (lots of tartar build-up around the gums), you'll probably want to take him to the vet to have his teeth cleaned. A lot of small breeds have problems with their teeth and if left uncleaned, could lead to serious health problems.

If the teeth aren't really bad, get dog toothpaste and a small, soft toothbrush (for a min pin you might want to get a finger brush which fits over your finger and you put the toothpaste on that to brush). Brush his teeth very gently - he'll probably fight you at first but if he does, just do the front teeth at first and if you stay calm be really gentle he'll get used to it.

Greenies are dog bones with a mint scent. They clean the dogs teeth and breath at the same time.

Try brushing his teeth, I have to brush my pugs teeth all the time. You could also try giving him greenies, they are an all natural chew toy that really helps with the breath, you should be able to get them at any pet store.

Take it to the vet. It could be some kind of infection or needing a teeth cleaning. Chewies are temporary.

If the dog eats table scraps, that could be part of the reason. Those greenies are good for dog breath. If you do try them, only feed your dog ONE GREENIE a day or it may get sick.

Have his teeth checked...A lot of small dogs do not chew their food & this results in bad teeth & gums which will create the bad breath
