During the time of the Shah, prior to 1979, there were Shiite Muslims, Bahais, Zoroastrians, Assyrians and Jews of Iranian descent living in Iran. In 1979 there was a revolution and Iran became a constitutional Islamic Republic with a Supreme Leader of the Shiite sect and an Executive branch headed by an elected President.
Those Iranians who could afford to leave the country, left just after the revolution. This includes those Muslims who were Muslim by birth but secular by practice. The people now residing in Iran are mostly Shiite Muslims.
According to the CIA world factbook, Shi'a Muslim 89%, Sunni Muslim 9%, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha'i 2%
Iranians are not Arabs. There are only about 3% Arabs or mixed Arab-Persian in Iran. The primary language of Iran is Iranian (Persian) which is written with the Arabic alphabet. The Qur'an is studied in Arabic.
