i always had a query going on in my mind, i have noticed that most people who commit suicide always have some materialistic need which is not fulfilled other than sickness which drives them to suicide like not getting ends met, failure in love, loss of money, etc etc. so my question is that as we all know, monks dont have materialstic needs like money, love, sex, home, cars.......etc....do u think they have any reasons to suicide??? i mean what can be the probable factors for it?

Monks are too close to God to do such a stupid thing. Of course not.

I don't have statistics, but don't you remember all the monks that self-immolated during the Vietnam era? Those were political statements, though. We have a Buddhist monastery in our region, and in the last ten years, there has been one suicide of a monk from that monastery, accomplished by hanging.
Monks are people, too and suffer depression, and all the other mental illnesses that non-monks (for lack of a better word) do.
I agree that many suicides are for the shallow reasons you describe, but there are lots of reasons for suicide. The elderly and infirm who do not wish to be in pain any longer...those running from the law, and do not want to go to jail, or public humiliation of arrest and the judicial process (lots of pedophiles there). I have known of a few suicides where they just "had it all" materially, and were still grotesquely unhappy enough to end it all.
There is a peak of suicides in the late teens, early twenties, slightly more males than females, and the conclusion to the investigation was that this was in response to a failed first love. I consider that group the most tragic. We have all had our hearts broken at some point, if someone just could have convinced them that the hurt will go away.

I knew very well a truly religious, good-natured, very positive, healthy and contented man who at the age of 79 suddenly and inexplicably had the idea that he would die at the same age as his father (80yrs). He didn't but he became a worried man who hanged himself at 81.
Monks are humans like all of us and susceptible to mental disorders which I'd say is the major factor for rejecting the gift of life and committing a suicide.

Monks are as prone to depression and suicidal thoughts as anyone else-doesn't necessarily have to do with any worldly need, either. Sometimes it just happens.
