I have a golden Labrador & a spaniel, 3 cats & kids....i have my downstairs done in flooring and would never go back to a carpet again!!
Its so much easier just to soft sweep the entire downstairs every night before bed and damp mop it ova!!
We walk the dogs along to the river, and they come indoors and that horrible wet dog smell you couldnt disguise in the carpets just wahes off the floor!

I would say definately get laminated flooring done.

i have a hairy dog and 2 cats - laminate. i had a carpet down and it picked up everything - no matter how much i vaccumed it never looked clean. With laminate you can just sweep it up and if someone has an accident you can just wipe it up. I put down washable rugs over the laminate to give them some traction because the laminate is very slippery.

laminate! I have one hairy and one not so hairy and i have some floors carpet and some not... put it like this theres a guy coming round next week to rip up the remaining carpet and put down laminate in its place. Oh and im selling the £300 dog hair dyson vacume! So if you do get carpet i'll flog it to you at a knockdown price! lol

Do not get carpet, or laminate flooring.
Get solid wood, it fits the same way with precut interlocking grooves and will out last laminate 10 times over.
Forget all the phony 20yr guarantees from suppliers, it's rubbish.
Drop something sharp and the laminate chips, you can see it a mile off, get it wet and the moisture seeps into the join and swells the MDF, it will never look the same.
your dogs claws will soon scuff the surface too and you can't re-finish it.
With solid floor you can.
I know; because i had my lower floor in the house in laminate, it's all in the skip now..

Laminate is much easier to keep clean and is hard waring and the dog should not scratch the floor, I have had laminate for past three yrs and no problem with the laminate or the dog.

Well, Yolandamaria D - aren't you just a charming human being??!!
Laminate every time, just got rid of our carpet and can't believe the difference it's made...we have a golden retriever the size of a small house and he's the hairiest dog in the world. Laminate good. Carpet bad. :-)

If you have to choose between the two go with laminate. Best value is Shaw SLP 30. Looks really good and has a locking system that is easy to use, if you plan on putting it in yourself. Don't buy any of the cheep crap for china. The locking system sucks.

IMO ceramic tile is a better choice. Ceramic costs just a little more than laminate and adds much more value to your home.

Nah, get carpet. I've had both and laminate mean u still gotta hoover regular and then u gotta mop it coz the paw an' slobber prints show up big time. Double the work, wish I'd never gone laminate.

I have a hairy dog and have now got laminate flooring and it's now made cleaning much easier.
It also makes things "feel" cleaner especially if your dog gets fleas. No chance of them living in the laminate!

Well I would say laminate because otherwise the carpet will have hair everywhere. But the down side to laminate is that you have to sweep it everyday because the hair will show a lot more.
