He had a better public relations team. I.E. the King and Queen of Spain. Also the other people here were not looking to discover anything. They just happened on it during their wanderings.

I guess the answer to this lies in the fact that history as we know and understand it is written by people. People who are not now nor ever have been 100% accurate as a source of information. Records and popular history is often a reflection of what was at the time "best" for those doing the writing! Someone much smarter and profound than me once said, "there is no such thing as truth, only perspective!"

Because those Europeans that came after him, following his routes actually explored and colonized America instead of simply landing and going back once or twice.
All that aside America as "discovered", explored and colonized by Asians thousands of years before the Vikings landed in the east.

Because the "point of reference" were the Europeans. From their vantage point, as far as they were concerned -- the "first" one to discover the New World was Christopher Columbus. They simply didn't care about, or recognize other groups.

Because he was the first European to explore that land. And plus he was originally attempting to find a western route to trade.
