Gen 2:17 tells of God warning Adam that if he eats of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, "on that day" Adam will die (not that Adam would be condemned to die eventually, but that "on that day you will surely die"). Yet Adam lives on to the age of 930.

Do you think, perhaps, that after witnessing God's 'wisdom' in Gen 2:18-20 where God tries to convince Adam to choose an animal for a mate, Adam figured God's 'wisdom' about the Tree was just as shaky?

Wasn't refusing God's offering of animals for mates the first time Adam chose not to trust in God's wisdom? Is original sin the result of Adam not trusting God because God offered him animals for mates and not another human?

Jim Darwin: I keep a copy of the KJV by my desk for these questions. Sceptic's is okay, but I find it too slow for my purposes. Furthermore, I have several passages marked in my copy for quicker reference.

if you got that off skeptics annotated bible like i did, you rushed here to ask and make fun of it

then i bought a bible and was reading it, and noticed many of the same problems that are on those atheist websites, and some of my own and i had all these ideas about what the solution was,

the wording of it isn't so much important cause its a translation, and researching as i have, my own ideas about what were in the original, havent panned out, the words in english are just as good

so, the god said adam would die, and on that day he ate the fruit he became mortal, and capable of dieing cause before the fall there was no death

obviously we know this isnt true, since the age of the earth and dinosaurs and australopithicus and all that, im not lecturing on you

so adam and eve is a story for you and me a parable a mythology,

one ive studied heavily this past week,

please read in genesis 3.21

you probably know the story as they eat an apple then go and get fig leaves

the real story is they eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, then are aware of their nakedness (sin), and yes they got fig leaves (mans attempt to cover sin); then god came down and punished them to leave the garden - which had access to the tree of life - way important later and in the end of the bible - but genesis 3.21 -

the genesis 3.21 is so important to me in the story, god comes down and punishes them but gives them animal skin, it says tunics of skin,
the of skin shows up two other times in the old testement, meaning as it does here, purification through blood, shedding of innocent blood - ie god's way to forgive sin!
so adam and eve got TEMPORARY forgiveness,

we see this even in chapter 4, cain a farmer, abel a shepard, abel's sacrafice was acceptable to god - why? cause he shed innocent blood.
So old testement times the people had to kill animals, sacrafice them, they had to be kosher, to get temporary sacrafice

Jesus in the story - a permanent sacrafice, for those who believe ( I do not believe by the way) - the act of religion - in believing that the spilling of Jesus's innocent blood - leads to permanent forgiveness, and as the new testement teaches us they who believe in Jesus in our times get access to the tree of life - which gives us a fruit that makes us able to stand in the prescense of god and not "die" or whatever, as it was in the garden of eden, the tree of life, that adam and eve had access to,

so whats the life lesson for you and me who dont want to sacrafice a goat and dont want to believe in jesus, and dont think we need a tree of life to get with "god", and for you and me who dont even believe in the same "god" as the christian world?

well its a good story, neat how the bible starts that way and end in revelation with people who believed on one side having access to the tree of life,

one thing i forgot to mention, people in the old testement times, i guess they get into heaven cause they believed in the promise of a savior or something, i never really tried understanding those loopholes cause well, mythologies,

but anyhow, the tree of knowledge of good and evil for you and me, is of course about growing up losing innocence and making mistakes,

I believe that was the greatest day of Adam and Eve's life, they were able to have an authentic life after that, for if not every day would have been just the same as before.

Those who are fundamentalist non-evolutionist and think adam and eve were real people think oh no that was awful the worst day of their life cause they had to leave the prescense of god,

for them the greatest thing is the prescense of god, i dont get that cause I dont believe in it I guess.

One I share with people the story and I say but look here they got temporary forgiveness with genesis 3.21; and would have believed in God, and would have had an opportunity to get into heaven when they die, etc. i hope it doesn't fall on deaf ears,

Maybe it means that the harmony that Adam originally lived in was no longer present...

I look at the whole garden story as a story of betraying the trust of a good friend....It's like if you have ever felt the chemistry with a person and they have intentionally betrayed you, the chemistry leaves and it really can't be restored to that original state.

Once again when people try to actualize the Bible, it is ridiculous.

Wow, some people can act really vile as we can see on the above entry.....

IT is true Adam lived 930 years, & Adam did die within that One day time frame, Because according to the bible, a day is 1000 yrs. SO Adam did die before his one day time frame was up, & as far as God giving Adam an aninmal for an helpmate, That type of helpmate was not for Adam reproduction, but a helpmate to do all the manuel labor for Adam, Because Adam was not given the job to do manuel labor until the curse. God gave Adam, Eve for his helpmate to reproduce

Remember also that there are God days and People days. You are confusing the GOD day with the people day. People's day is based on a different criteria than God day.

Do some more study of the Bible and you will realize the length of ONE GOD DAY. You will realize that Adam did die within that day, in fact within a few hours if you compute human years into the time of a God-day!!

I hope this makes sense.

God did not lie. Adam died eventually, as did the rest of humainty. What happened when Adam and eve ate the forbidden fruit was, they no longer had life with out dying. They committed the first sin, and the wages of sin is death. They eventually died. Good grief!

Be careful of what you say against God...

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Adam died spiritually.

He lost all contact with God Almighty and had to communicate with God through the Lord God who was the helper of God.

The Devil knew this would happen and decieved Eve so he could hurt God by becoming the master of Mankind.

I think the metaphor was intended to represent the spiritual death of Adam, or mankind. This happened when we (Adam ) started to practice judgment, or gained the so-called knowledge of good and evil.

The idea was intended to explain that as long as judgment was practiced man would be dead to his spiritual nature. As soon as he realized that judgment did not serve him and realized that the knowledge of good and evil was false knowledge, he would find himself back in the garden he had never left.

This is a simple formula for happiness. When we see something that God created as unacceptable it is a misunderstanding on our part. A misunderstanding that troubles us.

The problem is never with Gods creation it is always with our judgment that we have placed upon it. To escape the troubles that judgment causes for us we need only stop judging to realize we have never left our home in the garden except for our judgmental nightmares.

Adam did'nt die in the flesh, but spiritually. And what is this about God offering him animals as mates? A new one on me.

Two ways to answer this.
One------He died in God's eyes (spiritually) but lived on as a soul until his death.

Two-------Since 1000 yrs is like one day to God, Adam's living to be over 900 yrs still put him within God's time period of one day.

2Pe 3:8 But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

I stand with the second answer.

I answered the animal question on it's own page. As far as Adam dying on the day he sinned, he did. There's a difference in Spiritual death and physical death.

HEY read the damn book already. There were two forbidden trees in the garden, the tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good an evil, eve picked fruit from the tree of knowledge, Adam ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge, neither is mentioned as having harvested or eaten of the tree of life.

As I said, read the book.
