I'm not ashamed of sex.
I guess people associate sin with sex out here because you were surveying people who come from a Christian background, where lust etc is sinful - a major sin. If we were asking muslims they might answer "shirk". Buddhists might say "grasping" or "desire".
After *rgasm there's a bit of a 'come down' which might have been interpreted by the magically oriented mind as an immediate punishment...for prior sin. Nowadays we know better and that it's due to the natural removal of the hormone dopamine from the biochemical pathways of the brain.
Searching through yahoo's UK image directory for "sin" the first 5 images returned were of a sexual nature, so that backs up the original conjecture that associates sex and sin. But again I think this is a Christian phenomena. A similar search on Yahoo Indonesia and Japan resulted in far fewer sexual images - only 2. A search for images under "gunah" (the Arabic word for sin) still resulted in some sexual images, but only 1 out of the first 5. Three were scripture and one was a picture of bacon and eggs.
We can see that other cultures too see sex as sinful, but there are other things not common in the west, like haram food (bacon).
When it comes to answering questions about sex I don't know the details of your cases, and have not personal experience on the web so am not really qualified to answer. I can only speculate that sex is both a personal and taboo subject and that people might not discuss it openly to strangers in a public setting as frequently as other less risque matters.
Luke.

I don't know if you can check back on previously answered questions, but I responded to this a few weeks ago. This same question was asked and without sounding wordy, what it boiled down to was this. Christendoms religious leaders have twisted this account to make it seem as though the fruit that Eve took was the "sin" of sex. That was the furthest idea from God's account in the Garden of Eden. The fruit represented her willing disobedience to the command of her husband whose command issued forth from Jehovah God. Sex was a desire instilled by their creator to populate the earth. Jehovah said to Adam and Eve. Extend the garden and fill the earth with children. Why would sex be condemned when that was needed to fulfill the command to procreate? Please check back on my detailed answer if you can.

Really I do'nt know but theft is a sin , drinking alcohol is a sin , torturing humans and animals is a sin, cutting green trees is a sin, insulting others is a sin, killing people is a great sin. Any way we are not angeles , nor we are devils . Legal sex( marriage) is the only way to maintain human being on earth, so why is it a sin??

Sex is a gift from God only to be shared by a man and a woman who are married.
Adultery is a sin. It's when a person who is married has sex with another person other than their spouse. It is also thinking about having sex with another person other than their spouse.
Homosexuality is also a sin.
And the answer to your real question: Yes masturbation is a sin.

It is very sad....Marvin Gaye said it well. We need sexual healing.
I think of "sin" as in the Greek term to miss the target....I am aiming for the target, which is love, when I miss it....I just keep practicing.
People can't stand that kind of liberty because we have such hang ups, and rules attached.....They honestly think that with liberty we are going to morally decay. Liberty sets you free to make good choices and develop into the gorgeous creatures that we have the potential to become.

Because we have been brainwashed by by religious groups. Don't forget that guilt is one of the most powerful controlling mechanisms and it is used without mercy by all faiths to keep their followers in line. Reject it all and start to live as a free person.

because primitive religious groups like Catholics have preached that pre marital sex is a sin, and to have sex for anything other than conception of a child is a sin.

because "all other sins are done outside the body, but when a man sins sexually he sins against the body"?
I think that's how it goes. I Corinthians?
