Height is your friend. Kids can get into things close to the ground but it is more difficult to get to things in high cupboards.
You could also use padlocks and chains instead of that cheap plastic crap. Of course you'd have to cary around a key ring but that would keep them out.

i would go to a toys r us or something like that and get better locks. my son is 17 months and i have the outlet locks he isn't allowed in the kicthen without us and a gate by the kicten this seems to work. if they are getting into the outlet plugs my son does at times i am just there to put the plug back in. good luck

there is no way once they believe they belong there they dont go away. the only thing you can do is make sure they are unhappy that way in 18 years they will leave on their own.
