In Switzerland, community (peer) pressure forces people to recycle -- their neighbors would embarrass them if they put their rubbish in the wrong bin.
That's cheaper than bribing people to do the right thing.

I think a reward would be a good idea as what is recycled is saving the earth and at the same time making it cheaper for people to save money in a production line,eg. they can buy a recycled product for manafacturing cheaper than using new materials,so if they get the benefits of this why shouldn't we!but no we still pay the same price while other companies are saving money on using these recycled products, yes we should recycle but if we are getting charged full price on a product that has been recycled in some way we should receive something, what I mean is why pay for second hand materails when you can get the same thing with brand new materials,I do recycle but when you think about it why bother if it's just another buisness making money from us without any return

I think there should be an incentive of some kind. Currently I pay extra for the privledge of cleaning and sorting my trash. I do it for the good of the environment but alot of ppl wont go through the trouble and pay the extra money. Perhaps they could give a tax break to ppl with recycling service or something. I think if there was more of a personal interest then more ppl would recycle.

In the 60s I financed all my spending money from taking bottles back. Ribeana bottle were the best as the were worth 6d while most beer and coke bottles were 3d. Once I found a soda syphon and got 5 shillings that is about £10 in today's money.
I'm all for bringing this back. However I hear that the truth is that much of what we recycle is pushed into land fill as we outstrip demand from the recycle industries.

If it will urge everybody to recycle why not give rewards. We do recycle, I bring it to the local store that has recycling machines, I do get some money for it, not a lot but it doesnt matter I will still recycle.

Over here in the Netherlands (at least this part) we pay for the amount of garbage we produce: the more litter you give to the garbageman the more you pay. It's just 1 of the taxes.
There are special recycling units for collecting glass, tin cans, plastics and so on at each supermarket.
Looking at the place I live the community had such a reduce in litter that there was a refund of the "base litter-tax" this year.
added later:
While reading the other answers it seems to be there's no refund on products like bottles in the States like over here: when buying ie. drinks in a glas bottle in the Netherlands you'll pay about € 0.15 for the bottle extra. When you return the bottle you'll get your 0.15 back...
Great object (those bottles) for collecting money for projects all over the world: sometimes schools collect your refund-bottles and donate the money to foreign projects like the Tsunami.

You can earn money by collecting aluminum cans and glass bottles. You can check for the nearest recycling centers in your state. I think it cost 3-5 cents per can or bottle. By doing recycling you're saving the earth from pollution. Read up on this website....

Me too, as i have always wanted to recycle but found it difficult to get around to it, as i have a very hectic lifestyle, we have just bought a com-poster from the council, also there are not many places where you can take things to be recycled, so they should hire recycling men to collect recycled goods, just like they have bin men to collect rubbish bins.

if youre talkin about young people recyclin needs to be an obvious thing to do like if we put a recyclin bin by every normal bin in parks and things with a label sayin wrappers in here or summin then people would just do it without thikin but young people would want cds and money and clothes but the goverment would not give out money cause it would cost to much which kinda defeats the object. so a reward system is a good idea but i doubt i wouldwork i meen im 14 n none of my friends would be motivated by it! sorry

I think everyone should recycle. In other European countrys you are rewarded for recyling, norway, sweden. You wont find any rubbish lying around, as you can take it to the supermarkets for cash, only a few pence, but it all adds up towards your new food shopping.
