First of all you go to seminary school. They will teach you all these things. Second, you need compassion. Then leadership skills. But the most important of all is the love of God.

1Tim. 3 and Titus 1.... tells you the qualities that a minister must look for in the anointing of another minister.
It is usually through affiliation with a church that you become a minister but many have gone to bible colleges and gotten degrees and doctorates to get their ministers training. Although this method is widely accepted by Church's I find those that become ministers through college seems to be robotic.... being that they rely on their education rather than relying on the spirit of God to guide them.

Aside from church duties you must be ready for anything.....
Wanting to become a minister is a wonderful thing and it all depends on the church you are affiliated with that you will know what is required.
In the church that I came from, it was the presence of wisdom, knowledge and the understanding of the bible.... that was recognized in a person... who would be accepted as being chosen by the spirit of God because it is believed by all that the spirit of God is the only way a person can get wisdom, knowledge and understanding of God.

In my opinion, Ordination is the best way to go. A minister don't have to be perfectly perfect but a minister has to have the ability to communicate with God in such a way that God given knowledge is clearly present within that individual.

I hope you are serious about being clergy. If you are, I hope you reach your goal.

If you are Catholic, you need a four year bachelor degree with at least 2 years of philosophy. If you don't have Phil- you must take it before seminary.

You must be celibate for at least two years before entering the 4 year major seminary. After which, you will ordained to the transitional diaconate- on the job training, and about 6 months later to the priesthood.

Depending on your Diocese, your first pastorate usually comes after spending some time under the direction of a seasoned pastor. My friend becamse the youngest pastor in our Diocese in 2004 at the age of 37, ordained 8 years.

Becoming a pastor is a HUGE responsibility! As a leader of the flock, a pastor must be aware that everything he says or does EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY has a profound effect on his people as they look to him for direction and leadership. His words and deeds will either bring people closer to God or drive them away. A pastor must dedicate himself fully to shepherding the flock and bringing them closer to the Lord. His life must be beyond reproach. He will be visiting the sick, marrying the young, burying the dead, counseling the hurting, and representing himself as a follower of Jesus to the community. His life must be one of constant prayer to seek the will of God for his life and his work. Becoming a preacher is not the hard part. Keeping his life free of sin so that he will glorify God is one in which he must not fail!
