They say "hello" too.
I was born and raised in Hawaii, lived there 17 years of my life, and every single friend or family member I've ever called in the whole time I've lived there answered the phone with "hello". (My friends were Japanese, Korean, Chinese, white, and mixed-race, so it wasn't a racial thing - we all answer the phone with "hello" just like the rest of the people in the U.S.)

Hawaii is still a part of the USA. I would think they say Hello like everyone else.

I heard this on the radio the other day--
The reason everyone says 'hello' when they answer the phone is because Alexander Graham Bell, the person who invented the telephone, made this the 'official' greeting when answering the phone.
Before choosing 'hello' he was considering using the phrase 'AHOY'
