The reason you can't play DVDs on Windows Media Player is because WMP doesn't come with the MPEG-2 codec needed for DVD playback. You can download free codecs from the sites below which will enable you to play DVDs.

1. http://www.filehippo.com/download_codec_pack/
2. http://www.bleedinedge.com/download/dvd_codec.zip
3. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Dscaler_MPEG_Filters.htm

Window media player does not have a dvd decoder in it. Unfortunately you have to install another dvd player such as Intervideo home theatre, or power dvd etc. These softwares often are given away in a software cd that comes with the computer or the dvd drive. Once you install one of these, windows media player will play DVD.

Just found a dvd decoder plugin for Windows Media on Microsoft's web site

Well there is a few option's for ur case :
1. Download some free/paid DVD playing software from the Internet.
2. Try to use System Restore to get ur XP to an earlier date.
3. If 1 & 2 dont work at all ...then save all ur personal data and reinstall XP .
