The Buddha we are familiar with was a prince from India name Gaumata. He came almost 2500 years ago. He founded Buddhism as we know it today. He is the skinny person.
According to Buddhist scriptures, there is another Buddha who will come again to save mankind. He is the laughing buddha - a fat bald headed Buddha with a bag of 'goodies' over his shoulder. This is the happy Buddha and many believers touch his stomach and bag for good luck.
The slim formal female is another Buddha who manifests himself into a female form to save the world. In this form, she is refused to accept full enlightment and Buddha-hood because she wants the world to be saved first before she becomes a Buddha.
Enlightment is possible for everyone...just follow the middle path..

Sidatha Gautama Buddha, the most recent incarnation of the Buddha 2500 years ago in India, was slim and princely. The Buddha of the next age is the fat, jolly chap called Maitreya, he is yet to come. There have been several incarnations of the Buddha throughout time and, of course, strictly speaking the Buddha spirit has no form and inhabits the chosen body to interact with the physical world. Being a Buddhist, I have always wondered why in most drawings and even statues the Buddha is shown at the point of Enlightenment as a fit, healthy man when if you study the texts, he must have been emaciated and near death at this time. Om Shanti.

Buddha statue is made according to the vision of the maker. Some are fat some are slim.Buddha was a prince who became saint.Since he was under meditation without food for long he could only be slim male. The paintings in Ellora caves show reltively slim Bhuddha.Idols in Sothern Parts of India are very slim. But the appearance of Buddha is not important, but the principle of love and compassion to all living things ,even animals is commendable.

The slim Buddha is the Indian form and the fat Buddha is the Chinese form, I think it has more to do with cultural interpretation than historical accuracy.
Although given the choice I'd choose to believe the Indian version is more correct as the writings about Buddha say he was energetic and lived a healthy lifestyle.

Buddha was not fat.
"Athletic and fit throughout his life, competent in martial arts such as chariot combat, wrestling, and archery, and later easily hiking miles each day and camping in the wilderness. Images of a fat "Jolly Buddha" or Laughing Buddha are actually depictions of either Maitreya the future Buddha (Chinese Mile Fo), or a 10th century Chinese monk, Budai Heshang (Japanese Hotei) "
