If you believe God created the world, it's reasonable to ask, How did he do it? What were the forces and mechanisms he used? Why not look to science and see that he started with the big bang, the force of gravity, inflationary cosmology, quarks and natural selection. Those were his tools. To that extent, science is not a threat, it's your best friend. It's the best tool you have for illuminating the grandeur of creation. A Hubble Space Telescope photograph of the universe evokes far more awe for creation than light streaming through a stained glass window in a cathedral. I mean, come on, that photo is an actual representation of the reality that God created, if that's what you believe. So why not embrace science rather than fear it?

emphasis on IF THAT'S WHAT YOU BELIEVE. Now it happens that I don't, I just think the universe is a fascinating and beautiful place on its own, without having to invent a god as well

I am a devote Orthodox Catholic (and proud of it) yet I do NOT fear science.
1- if possible, I will ask God how He did it all if I get to Heaven. I think He might say "because I can, I'm God" and I will accept that answer. What right do I, a mere human creature, have to ask God how and why He does things?
2-God is just that - God. Why would He need forces and mechanisms to create the universe? Maybe He just thinks about it and snaps His finger. Who knows!
3-having a major in science I have considered God creating the Big Bang. There was nothing in our part of space and He put two tiny atoms there and made them smack into each other and presto, the universe started to appear. Who knows! The universe, space, is probably bigger than anyone can even imagine. We know about a lot of planets, suns, asteriods, space dust, etc. but if the universe that we know of is expanding, what is it expanding into? More space? Will it bang into another universe? Who knows!? (I bet God knows!)
4- I've never thought science was a threat. Science is great. That's how we learn about things. It's technology that scares me. Cloning and such. I don't like that!
5- you mention "the grandeur of creation". Is 'creation' a scientific term? If something is created, who created it?
6- We should embrace science. It love it! I learn a lot from it. But I have one question, it's a question that I asked my science teacher in 5th grade. "Where do scientists come from?"

Very Good Question
I am a Christian, and I am in awe of the mechanisms involved in the creation of not only our world, but the complexity of the human body too!! Science only reveals the amazing, wondrous abilities of such things as the human brain, but as yet cannot duplicate it. I think that GOD wants us to hunger for knowledge, not be frightened by it.

Your initial question needs a "some" after the word "do". Some people who describe themselves as Christians disdain science, it is true. This is generally because science is based in the idea of continually formulating questions, whereas religious dogma gives authoritative assertions. The latter is emotionally reassuring, and it is this reassurance that is very necessary to the satisfaction of the fundamentalist's spiritual/emotional needs. They belive in creationism because its is a story complete, one that directly claims God as creator, and this "hands on" concept of God gives them a sense of order and security that is lacking in science, with all its "whys".

As they fear that science will prove the existance of God was just a fabrication. They fear that the life they have been promised aftre death and the glory of it by believing in an entity such as god, if proved to be false is utterly incomprehensible. Put it this way, someone promises you something and doesnt deliver, you get peeved! Now imagine a few billion peeved Christians, that would be hell! Although with a hint of 'I told you so'

You're generalizing and assuming things. Not a good start. Not all Christians fear science. Science has backed up Christianity, so there's no need to fear it. Science was created for a reason, not for the reason of proving Christians wrong but for helping us develop.

Who said we fear science. I think that is a misinterp. about Christians. If the "Big Bang" theroy is true, to me God was the cause of that. I think science can actually prove Christian beliefs as it has already converted some of the top scientist trying to disprove God.

It doesn't disprove a Christians religion and I definitely have no fear of science. But think about this if I am wrong about there being a God then what have I lost. If you are wrong then what will you lose.

Personally I do not fear science...in fact I am a huge supporter of it. I still believe in Jesus Christ...no ifs and or butts...but I know enough to not mix my faith (which should deal with how I interact with others) with my knowledge (which should tell me how things work/happen etc.)

becuase they believe in intelligent design and evolution goes against their beliefs and perceptions about how life was created. They think it's demeaning for us to have evolved from the same ancestor that apes did.
