Just a point of interest - in France, where gathering wild fungi is popular, you can take your mushrooms to the pharmacy to get them identified. They often have a large identification poster on the wall.

i just took a biology class and the professor advised us to never eat wild mushrooms that you identified yourself to be supposedly safe. he said that mushroom identification is a drastically complex process and only people who have had 10 or more years of professional education and training should even attempt to eat wild mushrooms. some mushrooms are deadly, so wouldn't risk it.

Well; this one does the edible variety:

There's a few books out there (Little Gem does a small one) which is probably better as you can do a direct comparison as you can take it with you.

Dude, what did you eat? ;-())

Effective rule - if it peels, it's OK, it's an edible mushroom. If it crumbles when you try to peel it, it's not to be consumed!
