Do they politely ignore them? Or do religious people tend to ignore the reality of mental illness? Is it easier for them to deal with the reality of a physical illness?

i've seen one politely ignored, at least, but, in some congregations, you'd be hard put to distiguish the ill from the well. many consider religion a FORM of mental illness! mental illness IS physical illness, by the by - the brain is physical, and the source of mental ills.
