second part: should it be illegal?
just wondering what the yahoo world thought. And please think about the question, I know the knee jerk reaction is to say yes to both, but think of the other sports out there which are considered cruel but are not illegal (bullfighting) and others that are not even considered cruel (rodeo, dog racing etc..). Good luck!

yes and NO.. let me explain; what does a cattle dog love to do? what does it live for? Herding cattle right? Truly gamebred pitbulls are not MADE to fight as is so popularly described. There are really two dogfighting worlds. the one with gangs, drugs and money where they torture the dogs to make them fight and are killed and maimed if they don't. This is the highest level of cruelty and anyone doing this needs to be subject to the same treatment until their death. However, the flip side to that is the old way of doing it, if a dog didn't want to fight it was picked up and given away as a family pet. The whole point of fighting dogs that want to fight is to breed the most "game" one. Once you find out the level of gameness your dog has there is no point in fighting it anymore. These dogs are kept as loving family companions and are never violent towards people (the exact opposite actually). A game dog cannot be violent towards people, because then it cannot be handled in the pit. These dogs often times get along with other dogs in its household as well, but strange dogs...lookout! This requires a level of commitment and responsibility on the owner that is unparalleled. Game dogs are actually among the most balanced of all dogs, because they have a job and get adequate exercise, love and attention from their owners. Every person who said it is cruel said it was the people doing harm to the dogs, when in reality it is the dogs desire to fight and will to keep going. Read any book on dogfighting where they interview old time dog men, they will all say they never made one dog fight in all their life. When the dog wants to quit, its over. I think the case that the average American dog is abused more than any of these game dogs. Most people over feed and under exercise their dogs while giving them way too much praise for doing nothing. dogs were not meant to sit in one spot all day and watch TV with their lazy owners. They want to explore, they want to have a job, they need small portions of nutritious food, they need a strong pack leader to show them the way. There is more proof than could be listed here on how working dogs are incredibly happy and balanced. dogfighting is just another job on the list that this great breed can excel in. Some would go as far to claim it is cruel to NOT let them fight! As the one lady said greyhounds were bred to fight and its not cruel... greyhounds are tortured and thrown away like old dish towels once their racing age is over. It is possibily the cruelest thing happening right now with dogs, but the news likes the word "fight" better so pit bulls are handed the nasty reputation.

I don't think any of the bloody sports like bullfighting and such are legal in this country.

AND the actual dog fight is only a part of the picture! Do you have any idea how dogs are trained to fight? Dogs are a pack animal. Their instincts are to live in a group. You can't be a killer and live in a group. The fighting dogs are forced to fight. Notice I said forced!

Dog fighters take smaller dogs cut them so they are bleeding, tie them so they are defenseless and this is how the "fighting" dogs are given the taste for blood!

To make a "fighting" dog strong one of the things they do is put a collar on the dog with spikes pointing inward, then a heavy object is placed on thier, usuall log chains, or logs, neck. If they lay their heads down to rest they are painfully stabbed in the neck by the spikes!

The 'fighting" dogs are denied food, water and rest in the efforts to train them! Are you aware that a studies have proven a dog can attain the same mental ability as that of a 3 year old child? A dog is smart enough to grasp mistreatment. Dogs show acts or real love. Dgos can be driven insane. Dogs get depressed and happy!

Do you need to hear more? YES! Dog fighting is inhuman and the people how fight dogs are pansies. cowards, afraid to fight them selves!

Check out my sources! Police disptacher! What I have said is fact, not specualtion, not exhageration. I could say more about the disgusting low lives who enguage in this illegal and in human sport but I bet you get my drift!

Legal = Right? I don't think so. These savage sports have little to do with an animal's nature, but a whole lot to do with money and power. There are people who who need to make money and will use anything to get it. It's also an extension of their manhood to have the toughest dog or be able to reduce a 1000 lb. animal to it's knees by torturing it in bullfighting. I don't care about tradition or culture or what dogs were supposedly "bred" to do. If that's what they're truly "bred" to do, let's breed them to do something else.

You left out cockfighting and horse racing. Think about this, these dogs are put in a pit to basically try to kill one another, as are cocks. Bullfighting is very hard to watch, but highly regarded and is not legal in the USA. ( thank goodness) Thats pretty damn cruel. Greyhounds and bulls (in rodeo) arent meant to die doing what they do. I dunno if our lawmakers took this into consideration when they legalized some and not others. I do not agree with animals dying for there sport, (or people) on the other hand, unfortunately, its what they were raised to do, its all they know. A very sticky situation. I grew up in Oklahoma, where rodeo is very popular, and live in Mass. where dog racing is very popular, I dont support either, well the wrangler asses in OK are great, but thats about it.

Very cruel and very illegal. once a dog starts dog fighting, it will never make a good pet. They are too dangerous to have around people.

As for bull fighting, the traditional style of bullfighting is cruel and if not illegal, it should be. It causes pain and suffering for human enjoyment.

Dustin is pretty much on the mark as to what he stated. One answerer is so off the wall it is pitiful . Denying a dog water, food and rest ? BULLSH@T !!!! Torturing the dog ? Injuring another dog and
tying that dog up for bait? More BULLSH@T!!! 99.99 % of you people have never been to a professional match and the same percentage have never seen a game APBT !!! One of my dogs was purchased for 7,500.oo and do you think I or anyone else would do all these things to a GD CH like that? The person that said those lies has no idea what goes on in conditioning or matching and never will. True game dogs are well taken care of, they have to be !!! Where are your sources??? Mine are on my yard . By the way, I`ve had no less than ten cops and other law enforcement stop by to admire or want to purchase a dog . None of my dogs are for sale, ever.

Yes it is cruel and immoral..as is bull fighting (the old fashioned kind, anyway) Some rodeo is cruel, and some is not..
There are more humane ways to include animals in sports..such as agility and ring sport.

Proverbs 12;10 says, " The man in right standing with God, cares well for his animals"

Yes to both questions. People or animals being ripped apart for whatever reason is cruel.
Just because bullfighting & the like are not illegal doesn't mean they shouldn't be.

I'm with Dustin on this one.

When game dogs were bred with the code and tested with the code, they were different dogs.

Nowadays, like most all casual pet breeding, the dogs are not bred correctly. Anything with 'nads is fair game. The breed is overbred, badly bred and the sorry mess continues with poor choices made in the selection of homes for the pups. It is a mobius loop of despair.
