Well, to make a long story short, My elderly parents are tending this elderly dog. The dog will stay, so I and my mom have tried to do just that. On the whole, we do well. When it comes to ears and eyes, we tried several ways and none seem to work. Can you suggest something? also need tips on nail trimming. Thanks!

Nail trimming first - this is an elderly dog so must be used to having nails clipped. Just take a tiny bit off the tip so you don't cut the quick. If you do it regularly, the quick recedes a bit and you can keep the nails a good length. Just be gentle and patient holding the dog's paws, only clip a bit at a time and you'll be fine.

When you say you're having a problem with ears - what do you mean? Are they matted or are you talking about plucking some of the hair n the ears? If matted, you can take small, round-tipped scissors to cut the mats out. After that, just keep brushing the ears when you groom the rest of the dog. If you're plucking hair out of the ears because the dog has too much, you take a bit at a time and it's not necessary to take all the hair out. Just enough so air can get into the ear because too much hair in the ear often leads to infections.

Eyes - are you talking about the tear stains? If so, you can buy products in pet stores for removing tear stains.

Good luck with this dog and if you need help, you can contact me - I've been grooming long-haired dogs for a lot of years.

It all comes with patience. Give him a treat or two, to ensure him that he'll be safe and u're not gonna hurt him. And remember, return him with a few prasies and treats aft you're done with the cleaning. Once he is alrite with it, do this often in order to let him get used to this practice.

Take this little Shih Tzu to a groomer. Its a small breed so wont be that expensive.
