I am assuming you mean tactical knives and folders, etc.

Cold Steel is pretty low end actually as many others have said, some people have named off some brands that I have never even heard of and I go to blade/knife shows all the time, which might mean that it is hard to find.

Here are some brand names much better than cold steel (most more expensive), and this is in the tactical knife department, if you are looking for swords, replicas, bowie or kitchen knives there are others. Here are the ones I like, and in the tactical knife community are pretty hyped up, this is just a general ranking in my opinion. Well here are three that I like, there are a ton out there like CKRT, and a bunch of other less known but great brands.

1. Microtech Knives: Ever watch 24, or pretty much any movie/show where they do their research? They are all using Microtech knives, especially the HALO.

2. Masters of Defense (M.O.D.) what masters of defense does is get masters in a particular field, such as Duane Dieter (a well known close combat instructor for the SEALs) and have them design knives. The result, some pretty nice blades.

3. Emerson knives: They have the best Karambit knife out there, and they have a system of how to use it. They invented "wave" type opening devices that opens the knife as you pull it out of your pocket, they are copied through even cheap knives now. They are less expensive than the two brands above but still great quality knives.

There are some great places out there to check out knives and get good prices on. I highly reccomend knife outlet.

They usually have monthly sales, and have good prices on knives. The best way to get a good price on a knife is to find the one you want online, know what you are looking for, i.e. a Microtech Scarab, etc. then go to a local gun and knife show, and you can usually barter a good price.

The best place to go is a Blade Show. A tradeshow dealing specifically with knives, you can usually find retailers there that you can get dirt cheap prices on amazing knives, including actual custom mades, and even blade smiths selling their own works. I know that there is one in Atlanta every year, and there are others throughout the country, you can always check the internet for different knife shows near you.

All that being said, it really depens on how much you want to spend. If you are looking to spend less than 50 dollars, cold steel might be the knife for you, Spyderco would also be a good one, there are some decent priced SOGs out there. Hell for a cheap price the Gerber Gator is an awesome utility knife. If you are looking for top of the line, complete bad assed out the fronts automatics, and autos with carbide glass breakers on the butt, and seat belt cutters, the whole 9. Expect to pay 400 or so from a top manufactorer and that is a good price.

So alot of it depends on what you are looking for, can you find a decent knife that isn't going to break, will stay sharp, and suit your purpose for less than a hundred bucks? Absolutely. Hell you can even find very neat looking automatics for a cheap price.

Just remember you get what you pay for, the difference between a microtech and a generic is quality. A higher end knife is going to hold it's edge longer, is going to be able to take more punishment, is not going to close on you if you bang it hard on it's spine, and is going to last a lot longer, be able to be opened a lot more, and will remain so longer than you are alive. A cheaper knife that looks just as cool will suit you for what you want, but will dull quicker, may break, and may not last that long if you are using it often.

Hope that is of some help.

A lot of this depends on the type of knife you want and what you plan to do with it. Are you looking for durability or a razor edge? Folder or fixed? What type of point? What type of handle? What size? Multi-tool or regular knife? Serrated, half-serrated, or regular blade? Subdued blade coating? Belt or pocket carry? Regular open, assisted open, or automatic? Gutting fish or gutting men?

Cold Steel is middle-of-the-road. There's a bazillion good knife companies out there. Try checking out a few forums like the ones on socnet.com and lightfighter.com and come to your own conclusions. SOG makes good stuff and Stryder is awesome. Heck, even CRKT and Spyderco are better than CS. Charlie Ochs is a great knifemaker and has a website at www.oxforge.com. His black automatic knife is my favorite.

Others include
Swamp Rat knives ( a sister company of Busse Combat)

Frost Cuttlery. I used to sell them by the case-load. They were durable, very well sharpened, and I never had a complaint about them. They are also quite affordable.
