I am not athiest. I am merely asking a question about something that I have noticed on this site, sometimes found among church members, and something I have noticed in everyday life. Can these people really think for themselves and incorporate their beliefs in situation-appropriate ways?

I would consider an inability to hold a conversation without Biblical quotations to be a catagory of obsession-compulsion.

Sometimes. You can usually tell by their personality. Other actions when not in Church ect. Doesn't mean they are not believers though. Born-again beleivers still can be mentally ill.
These overly zealous bible quoting church people can be full of themsleves, be completely unfun. Not live a real life. These types of people scare off some that want to learn the word.

the thing about fairy tales (ie.religion)..is that the story is never the same, and usually over time becomes even more creative and bigger and more dramatic than it was in the beginning.
and Adyghe1985 has copy/pasted that reply to almost EVERY question I've seen that questions religion/spirituality, and/or questioning the scriptures. i highly doubt those are even Adyghe1985 own words, but some regurgitated statement that has been taken out of context and used for the purpose to sound more educated than he/she truly is.
whether you are atheist or not is not the point...and your question is a good one. i find it closed minded not to question things around us, that makes for a very BLIND race of people indeed!

No.
To me they can not take scripture and add it into their lives. They don't understand that the Bible is a guideline and if whoever you are communicating with if they have a Cristian heart you shouldn't have to explain it to them.
It's so sad that God had to send Moses to reinstruct us on our morals and principals. How many chances do we get? Then he sent his only Son to do it all over again.
I mean how dumb are we? We do claim intelligence. We just put our own personal needs in front of our soul that allready knows these things are wrong. We just became selfish and learned to live with our selfish behavior because that's what WE WANT.

Yes they do. Its a way of defining their lives as if they didnt have this over zealous need to inform us constantly of theyre ability to rhyme off or pinpoint exacty passages from the bible, theyre lives become hollow both emotionally and physically. It is common, and im sure there is medical terminology for it.

I don't know but on the reverse side of the proverbial coin, are overly zealous, Koran quoting, hi-jab (my husband calls it head job) wearing, mosque-going Muslim women mentally ill (especially in America)? I think to just attack Christian women is a bit narrow-minded. This world is mentally ill for the following reasons:
Too much selfishness
Too much ignorance
Too much breeding indiscriminately
Too many SUV drivers that hypocritically are against the war in Iraq, especially considering that 2/3 barrels of oil consumed per day in the US goes to the automotive industry and that most of our American oil fields or on the decline. Yet these women hate George Bush for getting us involved in Iraq.
Too many fat people
Too much selfishness in the medical community
Too many litterbugs.
Too many tail-gators
Too many religious zealots that don't know the first thing about science.
Too many religious zealots who are scientists
Too many sexest jerks
Too many people in general
Too many dumb people that think the world can still support billions more people, and even if it could, would that really be something the world should have? Would that be pleasant?
Too many criminals
and on and on and on......

No, they are not mentally ill; they only love their opinion too much. Passionately challenged perhaps but they are not ill people. More like total physiological lunacy, every bit of their life and body ha sgone a bit off.
