it sounds kinda corney but have you tried working a program of recovery around it.
are you powerless over your addiction - is your life unmanageable around smoking? ie; do you get up in the middle of the night to smoke, instead of getting to sleep right on through?
do you believe there is a power greater than you (and the smokes) that can restore your mind and body to sane behavior?
are you willing to let go and allow that power to take care of your cravings and let it remove the obsession from you, until the cravings go away?
craving = physical need
obsession = thought that outweighs all other thoughts

Try the new Pfizer drug, Chantix.
20% success rate after 1 year - much better than any other method.

And "cold turkey" is the least effective method to quit.
But you really have to want to quit, regardless, and it is bloody difficult, as you know. It is a very strong addiction.
Good luck quitting.
2-1/2+ years smoke-free after having also smoked for more than 20 years.

Smoking cigs is just mental. I quit with self hypnosis. I read this book. I really wanted to quit. I hated it. but yeah...i started again. It gives me something to do. I still hate it. You just need to make your self believe you don't ever want it again. The first week will be hell....but then the nicotine is out of your system so it will be easier. Over the counter stuff just helps the mental process and takes money from your pocket. good luck.

Going cold turkey has
been proven to be the most effective way
to quit smoking permanently.
the problem is having to actually catch the turkey
and cool it down.
ok2, seriously.... cold turkey.
it's very hard, but effective.
all the best, man.

the real treatment is within you.... controlling your urges lies upon how much discipline you have. it's easy to stop on anything as long as you want to. the desire to put a halt on ahything is in you. how to utilize your control, now that's another matter. realize this, no one has the influence on you, it's you will and desire to end it if you really want. if others do not smoke, why can't i, right? just ask yourself this, am i such an undisciplined person that even i can't control myself? is my self-respect so low... so much so that people won't respect me coz i don't?. if you have faith in yourself, and power to will it, you can accomplish anything you want... even smoking...
