I'm thinking of lighting our torches (they are those tiki-torches that keep bugs away) and using xmas lights. What else can I do to make the area well-lit without spending tons of money and using what i have?

If it's just lighting issue, here's some ideas:

1) You can half-filled some old drinking glasses and have some floating candles in. Or,simply drop some tealights in them without filling them with water.

2) You could buy some lightings like the xmas lights, but with bigger bulbs and sockets. Instead of leaving them as they are, you could go to some cheap paper lanterns to go over each bulb. This way,the light spread would be wider and dimmer. You won't want the lights to be too bright to blind your guests' eyes.

3) You may also want to put up some reflective items like a disco ball somewhere high up to create some ambience.

Decor:
1) There is one idea for you which is cheap and good. A lot of people thought balloons are for kids. But if you do it the right way,it's quite nice.
Feel them up with helium n bundle 5 in one bundle. Tie their ends together to another smaller balloon filled with water as weight. You get a balloon cluster now. You may make a few more and place them around the area. That will add some colours to your party.
But, remember not to choose more than 2 colours for your decor or it will look too complex and sometime kiddy.

Have Fun!

Try buying or making paper lanterns and rolling up a strand of lights inside and hang from trees or lay them around in flower beds, pots, or on tables. Balloons are also inexpensive decorations for the pool area. Make candle holders from small cans(tuna) and spray paint to coordinate. Place on dowels or metal poles. Go to a thrift shop and buy the open ended globes or glass shades used to cover ceiling fan bulbs. They usually fit into the can nicely. Hang ribbon streamers from under the cans to finish. Buy inexpensive spot lights, the kind they sell at Christmas to accent your front door and place colored cellophane over the opening, secure with rubber bands and "accent" the trees, or other plants or dance area. There are many ideas available on line..."google" party ideas or outdoor lighting ideas and you'll see. Hope you have a great party!!!

Do a hawaiian theme. Go to the dollar store or even ikea and find some bamboo sticks to decorate with, use your imagination on what to use them for. Make paper leis for all of your guests to take home. Put out a bunch of candles and decorate tables with flower petals.

Instead of using a plain candle, try using a molded scented candle for every table and decorated with flowers of your choice. You can use simple lightbulbs but put them under the bushes for great effect. Make use of your pool by placing some water plants and/or flower petals.

Gidday,

"A must have"
is hanging a Mirror Disco Ball and mount three outdoor portable flood lights pointing towards the mirror disco ball.

I did it when I had a pool party and it was a big hit with everyone.

The flood lamps I am talking about look a bit like this one in this site.
