Depends where you're going to live. North of Italy is usually more expensive than the South. Then, like in USA, you've to see how big is the apartement, where is it, etc. I'm living in Torino with 2 other people in an apartment good for 3 people (maybe even 4) not too far from the city center and we pay 500€... just an example.
But there are also many sites where you can search... here an example:

I lived in Sicily for 5 years. It's like anywhere else. It depends on how much money you have to spend. If your thinking of going on the cheap, stay home. I was just looking at some websites that have villas for short term rental. Those were in the $5-10,000 USD range per month. If you're looking for extremely cheap, be careful as some places are extremely old and are not fit to sleep in. Try googling " Sleep Italy" , it will lead you to many other websites. Good luck.

Have some local folk help you, mostly. Big Cityes and small towns have very different rental rates. Let's say in my experience, the same apartment may cost €400/month in Trieste and €1000/month in Rome.
Usually if you're not "referred" by some local folk you can't get good apartments for rent, you get just those the owner don't care a lot to be ruined by you.
Call an agency, a nation-wide one is Gabetti, another is Pirelli Re

Small city like cities in Umbria, Marche, and in some place in countyside like Langhe an Roero in Piemonte. i think of it relatively is super liing close to the vast cities. I stay close to Turin, a brilliant city the place i will discover each and every little thing (library, college, museums, stay shows) yet in addition site visitors and violence. the place a stay, 15 km from Turin, is a city of 17, 000 human beings, i will bypass out even previous due at evening, I knom "anybody" on the city and there is no the comparable smog that Turin has. So chosen a small city close to the vast ones!

it really depends on the city, some cities can be really expensive, like rome, or places to rent can be very hard to find, this also according to the city. i suggest you post a more specific question including city, if it has to be near the center, how big does it have to be, and the period of time (which months)
