I have been diagnosed with severe OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and I'm afraid they might send me to a mental institution. My family is saying it is probably best, as is my doctor. They say I will be happier, and that it is for my safety. I don't agree, I don't think I'm crazy. I don't want them to take me away. What should I do?

I am already seeing a psychiatrist, and have tried medication in the past, all to no avail.

HAH I didn't check to see what your other questions were and apparently you keep asking this question, either because you ARE OCD or you wish to project the image that you are. Either way, YOU NEED HELP so you should give in and let them take you away most likely - see my original answer below, and if you're serious (and I'm wrong) then by all means try to find an attorney who will help you or try the ACLU, they're a bunch of loony losers who take on ridiculous cases and more often than not screw things up (so if you are seriously OCD they will probably get a win for you):

It is impossible for anyone to answer your question seriously with the information you've given - on first read I was sure you were just joking and only decided to answer on the vanishingly small probability you are seriously asking for help - but you're asking in the wrong way and place. Plus one would have to know WHY people think you need to be taken away or how letting you stay unsupervised would be unsafe. You pose an interesting question that was asked by Brad Pitt in Se7en... do people who are truly insane know it? My own question is do the people who say I'm insane know that they are really the ones with the problem, which means you & I have something in common! Hang in there, and stop being such an insufferable OCD person and maybe, just maybe they'll stop trying to have you put away. Try talking to people and seeing if maybe they can help you adjust and fit in a bit more without "taking you away". Otherwise, looks like it's the funny farm for you... I gotta go, those darn kids are playing on my lawn again!!!!!!

Hi,

I suggest you contact your nearest most trusted family member or friend which is most willing to back you up and even help you out economically/place to stay temporarily. Also, you may want to contact a place that gived free legal advice or meet a lawyer.
You need to stay calm and not give anyone a reason to doubt your competence and decision making.
If you have the ability go and see at least two psychiatrist and try to get a written independent assesment and diagnosis of your disorder. If you think that you may be submitted to a pshychiatric institution (mental hospital) by force then you are better off submitting yourself willingly. Make sure you have someone to come and visit you and keep you cheerful - most times you need to stay for several weeks for diagnosis and correct medication but remember that so long as you are capable of taking care of yourself and not harming others or yourself then you will be released, most times without supervision. All you need to do in this case is to seek help, stay away from trouble and the people who think that you should be "put in hospital till your better" - even family and friends.
Hope you find the medication and lifestyle that works for you - good luck !

For one thing, theanswer to this question depends on your age and what state you live in. Some states in the U.S. have laws that protect childrens rights and children can get lawyers and fight for their rights. In some other states, from 16 on you have some say in what happens to you. So really it depends on how old you are and which state you live in if you are under 18 years old. Now if not in the states, then laws may be even more different. We kinda need more info before we can honestly answer you.

I'm so very sorry. Do you have a friend's place you can stay at? A close relative that will help you? Maybe stay at a hotel using only cash (they can trace visa and debit).

Best wishes

Tough call...
I have heard horror stories about sane people being locked up for years..
HOWEVER...
If you are really in need of help, you should go...
