I have been diagnosed with severe OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and I'm afraid they might send me to a mental institution. My family is saying it is probably best, as is my doctor. They say I will be happier, and that it is for my safety. I don't agree, I don't think I'm crazy. I don't want them to take me away. What should I do?

I am already seeing a psychiatrist, and have tried medication in the past, all to no avail.

I've been to the hospital for BPD before, and it's not as bad as you think. Does going to the hospital scare you because of what others will think or what you think?
Nothing should affect your emotions unless you allow it to. If the hospital is in your best interest, swallow your pride and go. It could be the best thing that ever happens to you. The best thing is seeing people who are worse off than you. It let's you know that whatever you have isn't nearly as bad as others. It can be a good vacation when you need some time away to sort this out and figure out how to deal with it. Everything you leave behind will be there when you come back.
The most important thing a hospital did for me was to scare me straight. I had to lie and pretend to be okay enough to get out of the hospital, but the experience was necessary to make the strides in recovery that have led me to where I am.

I think you should agree to the therapy. If your doctor and your family agrees (and obviously they do) that you need help, then you do. If you really have been diagnosed with an actual disease, then you need help. You may feel threatened by it, but that's normal. This does not mean you're crazy, it just means you have a disease and you need to cure (or at least treat) it. Please go with the therapy, you will feel better in the end. You don't want to get to the point to where you are admitted to a hospital against your will.

Just tell them you think you are crazy. For some reason, they only like to lock up people who insist they arent crazy. If you say you are, maybe they will just put you on lithium and leave you alone.

omg. I feel for u!!! first of all I believe that mental institutions do not help at all!!! they make it worse. i mean how strict rules and nasty colored walls are supposed to help???? there are counsiling sesions for people with OCD and u mite want to ask ur parents about that.. it would be better than mental house. and i bet it will work. try talking to them and say that maybe going to counciling be better. i dont know how bad u got OCD but if u got diagnosed with it its good to do something about it. but anything is better than mental house.
Good Luck!

OCD is often the result of guilty feelings, to start...Have you tried Luvox? my son has ocd terribly also..I cannot imagine why they would want to put you in a hospital for it? I do not think you will be happier..they don't understand...ask your doctor to give you Luvox, and see if you don't feel better,..and pray on it..OCD is technically, a result of lack of serotonin in the brain,..which causes the illness..no you are not insane..I don't like the fact they are trying to put you away..please ask doc for the luvox and see if it isn't a miracle worker, and let me know, I am curious...email me..It changed my son's life.

Spend some of your internet time looking up pharmaceuticals that help with OCD. There are drugs that assist in controlling compulsive behaviors, and you should be given a chance to try some of them so that you have an opportunity to gain control over your disorder.
Also, try not sharing so much about your compulsions with your family. You're not nuts if nobody knows about it.

sometimes we can't see what others might. talk to someone you trust completely and ask them honestly what is in your best intrest. a "mental institution" seems a radical choice...i would first want therapy.
you look the biggest decision maker in this process in the eye and say "this is my life and i want a chance to live it how i see fit" then proceed to agree to find an alternative path to help. be real to yourself and pay attention. if you see that maybe what the people around you think if best could help you down the road to lead a more productive life...trust in them as you would have them trust in you and give it hell.
hang in there!

Ask your family to consult another Doctor. It isn't unreasonable for you to want a second opinion, or even a third. Make it clear that you want to explore all of your treatment options.
