I have been diagnosed with severe OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and I'm afraid they might send me to a mental institution. My family is saying it is probably best, as is my doctor. They say I will be happier, and that it is for my safety. I don't agree, I don't think I'm crazy. I don't want them to take me away. What should I do?

I am already seeing a psychiatrist, and have tried medication in the past, all to no avail.

OCD is treatable with medication. If you go inpatient, you'll be there until you can get the right medication and therapy. Then they'll release you with an outpatient treatment plan. Go, and don't be afraid. It is easier to address the problem now, than to have a difficult life for years. If you feel bad about going inpatient, ask if you can go to an outpatient program. That might be a better solution for you, and it would be a good compromise. It's best to get help and deal with it now.
I also get the feeling that you're not telling us the whole story. Have you attempted suicide, or harmed yourself? If so, it would make sense that everyone is concerned about your safety. Be safe. Get help. It's OK to seek help. Once you're there, work the program and get something out of it. Don't be resistant to change.

Wow, I didn't know severe OCD could lead one to be sent to a mental institution. Try convincing your family to let you see a psychiatrist for a few months first, to see how that works. If that doesn't work, maybe a mental institution would be best.

That's weird, I don't know why they would send you to a mental institution. A lot of people have OCD, some worse than others. They have counselors for that, you should ask your doctor if he could recommend you a psychiatrist specialized in that area instead.

The only time you can be institutionalized against your will is if you are a danger to yourself or to others. If that is the case maybe you are better off temporarily in an inpatient mental hospital. Are you taking your medications? Maybe you need different medications, or different dosages.

First of all, How old are you? If you are under the age of 18 then yes your parents and doctor can put you in the hospital, but do not be affraid, it is just short term to get your medications balanced.

OCD is often the result of guilty feelings, to start...Have you tried Luvox? my son has ocd terribly also..I cannot imagine why they would want to put you in a hospital for it? I do not think you will be happier..they don't understand...ask your doctor to give you Luvox, and see if you don't feel better,..and pray on it..OCD is technically, a result of lack of serotonin in the brain,..which causes the illness..no you are not insane..I don't like the fact they are trying to put you away..please ask doc for the luvox and see if it isn't a miracle worker, and let me know, I am curious...email me..It changed my son's life.

I am aint reading your life story! If you want to wallow in your obsessions ok but you don't have to live that way....as humans we do something because we receive benefits out of our actions - what benefits are you getting from your obsessive nehaviours? If they aint genuine benefits - accept the truth and stop doing it. In my opinion and you did ask for it, is you are wallowing in self pity and are looking for escuses to label yourself with this or that disorder to give you attention and a perfect exscuse to get out of whatever takes your fancy.

You should listen to the professionals, or else learn to behave in an acceptable manner....including the questions you pose.
