The Hebrew Bible includes a number of commandments regarding tithing (giving one-tenth). Whether this refers to earnings, property, or (as in the case of Abraham) spoils of war is not always clear. See, for example Leviticus 27.30; Genesis 14.16, 20; Malachi 3.7-9; Deutoronomy 26.12; and about twenty others.

Many Christian clergymen (whose income, remember, depends upon donations to the church) argue that Christians' giving should at least equal, if not exceed, the Hebrew commandment.

But wait. Think about it. The Hebrew law, to the extent that it is clear to us now, was for a theocracy. Thus, it included what now would be called "taxes" to support the civil government and social causes as well as "contributions" to support religious personnel (the piresthood) and institutions (tabernacle, temple).

And one of the clearest lessons of the Christian Testament is that God's people do not live by law but by spirit, by faith, by love. See for example Galatians 3.13; Hebrew 7.18, 8.13; Ephesians 2.15: Romans 6.14; and many more. [For a fuller discussion of the scriptures, Hebrew and Christian, see

I think good conscience leads us to support the poor, the sick, the homeless, the suffering -- those who cannot support themselves and need our help.

But good conscience should also require us to know how funds being contributed to religious institutions are being used (for, after all, we do not give to God, but to human institutions with boards and rulers and fiscal officers).

For example, how do churches justify huge expenditures for beautiful, well-appointed buildings that are used, maybe at the most, four or five hours a week? Especially when there are homeless people, over-crowded schools, only limited and expensive housing for the ill, the elderly, the indigent, the mentally handicapped?

Furthermore, one might ask, What work is being done by staff employed by religious institutions; how important is this work; and how well is it be conducted?

I believe givers should be responsible -- not just for the percentage of their income they give -- but to whom it is being given and for what purpose it is being used.

There are many, many good causes for Christians to support -- a church, no matter how honorable its works may be, is ONLY one of them.

Spiritual "tithing" is a matter of individual conscience, not authoritarian, legalistic percentages.

And, yes, I am a "born-again" Christian. And among the causes that I try to support as generously as I can (all of us must choose) are Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, a local program to feed the hungry, and, yes indeed, a church that I'm convinced uses its funds primarily to serve others, not just to maintain a facility and "keep up with the Joneses."

By the way, most religious teaching, after all, is what "man thinks" that God says. You ask, "What does the bible say," but every answer to that question will involve someone's translaton, someone's selection, someone's interpretation of what scriptures say.

Blessings!

GENESIS 14:20 - "THEN ABRAM GAVE HIM A TENTH OF EVERYTHING"

You should read the whole chapter to get the reasoning behind it.
Some other readings on money that I think are good to read are:
Genesis 47:16-21
Leviticus 27:1-8
Psalm 15:5
Ecclesiastes 5:10
Haggai 2:8
Luke 12:59
1 Timothy 6:10

To name a few. The church still uses the 10% because right now we usually just have money to give and many people have more money than they really need to live on. Honestly we do. Back then people gave 10% of everything they owned, included coins, animals, crops like wheat and veges and fruits to feed the poor and clothes to clothe the naked. To find your 10% take an entire year's of wages and give 10% of that to the church. I give $8 a week (I"m on disability) but I volunteer for things and give jackets and needed supplies thru out the year.

The Bible states in several scriptures that believers should give a tithe or a tenth of their earnings/possessions. You can look at Chapter 27 of Leviticus, paritcularly verse 30. God accepts all gifts that we offer to him, and what truly counts is the giver's motive in the offering. If you begrudge God for what you give, then you essentially violate the First Commandment by placing something before God in your life.

In CHRISTIAN dispensation, giving should be in accordance with Christ's teachings.

According to II Corinthians 9:7

Every man ACCORDING as he PURPOSETH in his HEART, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

In MOSAICAL (Moises') LAW, tithes is what should be given by the 11 tribes of Israel to the Levitical tribe because they have no inheritance nor ways to earn since they were mandated to become priests. (Numbers 18:21-26)

You must "Tithe" which is 1/10, or one tenth, or
10% of your income.

In the back of my Bible, The King James Version [KJV]
is a Concordance. This gives words to find Passages
you seek. You can also buy a book of Concordances in a Bible Store. I am not Putting You Down, but I know not everyone knows about the Concordance. God Bless You

There isn't one I know of, but the tithe is normally ten percent, but I will say this, last time I gave to a church the preacher said he was going to build a playground for the children...as cute as this is, I wish my money which then became "god's" money would have fed some hungry kids...who have rickets... and don't have the energy to play on junglegyms because of malnutrition.. Just make sure you know where your money is going. Also that preacher drove a 27,000 dollar dually truck that the members bought for him and lived in the biggest house in the church.....WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sad thing is is that is not the only place i have seen like that. Tangent: New question coming up.

38 A priest descended from Aaron is to accompany the Levites when they receive the tithes, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of the tithes up to the house of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury.

Hey, that is a great question!!!

I have a lot of experience in this field, first lets understand one thing... This is only mentioned in the Torah, the first 5 books, or as some refer to it the "old testament"......

Now, what does it really say regarding giving charity? Well, it refers to 10% yes, and in the entire 5 books it never mentions money, it only says 10% of your fields, since back then people would rarely use money and rather trade goods.

Today we have no fields, or very few of us to at least, and therefore the great sages of the times have reverted this to allow us to give 10% of our earnings to charity.... Now the question is before taxes or after taxes? Does it include the money you spend on your childrens education if it is for the sake of Heaven? etc.... In all reality, there is a huge blessing in giving a tithing as it is called, 10%, and the blessing is the return of that money 10-fold, meaning 100% will come back to you THAT YEAR..... You know, you got to try it, but you must keep your eyes open for miracles that occur to you after you give the money, and you will see it. G-D did not allow man to TEST Him on anything, but on this he said, TEST ME, GIVE 10%, AND i will shower you 10-fold, and you will see that I am G-D the only one!

Money to give is money after you pay taxes, your net take home, and any other money you win, recieve, etc... 10% of it should go to the needy.... try to give it to close family first, then to farther family, then to the poor and needy in your area (direct is better than organizations), etc.....

Good luck, and enjoy your newly found wealth!
