what is a good treatment for herniated disc muscle relaxers or something more potent?

can somebody tell me why, the doctors i go to for a herniated disc give me muscle relaxers and NSAIDs to releave the pain? i think the pain is nerve related. is there somthing more potent like pain pills needed to get relief?

I got Prednisone and Norco for mine. I then had a shot of prednisone directly into my spine. I haven't had pain since. It's been 2 years.
