They are 2 totally different types of bike!
I have both, a hardtail is better for beginners as you will feel more in contact with the ground - a full susser will encourage you to go faster and take bumpier routes though, and despite what companies endlessly claim, there is no rear suspension design that doesn't 'bob' up and down when you pedal - get a bike with lockout for going up hill and on less bumpy flat surfaces, otherwise you'll find a full suspension bike a lot more hard work for xc riding.
It really depends on how bumpy the trails are around your way and what your budget is, you won't get a full sus bike worth having for less than 1K rrp.

For smooth terrain, hardtail, for rocks and roots, full suspension. It's not a question of climbing or descending, but on the surface itself. If it's a loose terrain, a full suspension will climb better than a hardtail, because the rear tire will be longer in contact with the trail.
You can use both for almost any kind of riding that you do, so it's kind of a personal preference.

The correct answer will depend on what genre of MTB you are going to participate in. Generally a hard tail is lighter and used mostly in short single track races. A full suspension dialled in correctly is mostly used for longer marathon XC type races. Now, I said generally. Both of these bikes can be used for a XC MTB event. The difference will be in rider comfort or economy of effort. Not one of these bikes is better than the other...... just a different tool in your tool box.

full suspension is the best. they now weigh the same as hardtails, and the rear suspension technology is a lot better, so you don't feel uncomfortable anymore when climbing..

It's really up to you to decide. With a hardtail though, all the bumps go all the way up your arms and spine.. which i think is much better. HaHa!!
