Does your state have some sort of legal rights organization that provides legal advice and/or representation to folks who can't afford a lawyer? If so I would start there. Try looking in the phone book or googling to see if you can find any legal resources in your area. If you can't find anything, the threat of a lawyer can sometimes work, even if you know you don't really have one. Good luck!

Crutches depending on what the case is you can go to the court house depending on where you llive and see if on certain days like Tues and Thurs between 10 am and 2pm they have a legal counsel that offers legal questions so that you will know how to handle your given situation. You can submit your own complaint only charge is paper and time to inquire. Then if i understand you your school is making accusatory statements that you are denying, contact the pricipal or jump rope over their head and contact the school board they have a panel to present your situation in front of.

In response to your first sentence -- that's what public defenders are for. Go to the court house or to your local law society, and they will outline the process for you.
In response to your second and third sentences, what are you talking about? It might make sense to you, but it doesn't to anyone else. If you can't explain things any better than this, you're going to have a lot of trouble with the law society when you tell them you need an attorney.

Most lawyers will do a consultation for free. If they believe you have a case for a lawsuit they will normally let you hire them with no money down and take a certain percentage of your winnings. Most won't charge you anything if they don't win your case. Call some of the lawyers in your town and explain what's going on and try to setup one of these consultations.

Contact Legal Aid--in Yellow pages. You may have to wait on "hold" for a while, but they are worth talking to, and usually charge on a sloiding scale. Good Luck. (Been there/done that on the crutches...bummer)

Try to find one who will work pro bono (for free) or on contingency (paid only if you win).

Check your phone book, or local state/county bar association referral services.

You never did explain what you did that caused the principal to take your crutches.

You can represent yourself in small claims court.

Since your case isn't some frivolous waste of time and money, I wouldn't bother with the ACLU because they wouldn't be interested.
