My dog today got with my boyfriends mothers female dog who is in heat right now. I have never had experience with this before, when dogs do this while in heat, are they pretty much guaranteed to be pregnant? or is itlike humans, and there is still a chance that she is not? we really don't want any more puppies, and dont know our options.

And on note, we did not miss the dog being in heat, we do not live with his mother, so neither of the dogs are fixed. Our dog lives in an apartment with us and hers in her house with her; she knew her dog was in heat, and my dog came over while we were visiting and we left him outside to not be around the in heat dog, and one of the children let him in while we were painting in a different room.

Your female may or may not be pregnant. Only a vet will be able to tell you for sure after a week or so. In the meantime do not allow male dog to associate with an intact female while in heat. Most Humane Societies offer low cost spay/neuter programs in effort to cut down on overpopulation and reduce the mass numbers of perfectly healthy, happy, adoptable animals from being euthanized each year. This is the responsible owner thing to do. Check with your local SPCA for specific info. Another source might be Spay USA. They are a group with vets across the country that offer a significantly dicounted rate for spays and neuters. Most Vets are willing to abort a litter at the time of surgery early on for the same reasons of diminishing overpopulation.

If you do not want her to be pregnant, you can bet she is.
I breed Chihuahuas and the actual futility rate is VERY high in dogs.
There is a shot that can be given to prevent the pregnancy, but it HAS to be given within a very short period of time, like within 24 hours of the breeding. The only bad thing about the shot is it makes the heat longer, it sort of starts her heat all over again. Also the shot can only be given ONCE. If she gets with another male you can not give her a second shot.
How did you (or the boyfriends mother) miss her being in heat. The vagina swells up three times the normal size and there are spots of blood everywhere the dog puts her butt for about 10 days.
You still have the option of spaying her early in the pregnancy, real early, like within the first 15 days of being bred. That would be cheaper than letting her have 3 to 11 puppies, depending on the breed of the female, then trying to pay to spay the entire litter after it is born. It is more expensive to spay with the female pregnany, and there is the thing of having to kill all the babies.
But that might be best, especially if the puppies are not going to be full blooded. It might save the puppies from a lot of suffering in the future.
I dont mean to sound so bitchy, you did state you did not want any MORE puppies, so you must have been around an in heat/ pregnant dog before...it is simply beyond me how anyone could have missed the fact that she was in heat.
After all it last for 21 days.

No species has a 100% of fertile rate so there still is a chance that she is not pregnant. You have several options: you could abort the puppies( I wouldn't)
Have the dog sprayed( I would)
Let the dog have puppies, then get ALL the puppies and mother dog spayed( Something I have done because there is so many unwanted puppies out there!)

The odds are 50/50 just like humans. Did you notice if they were "tied" or not? If not then the odds are even less that she is. Usually takes several breedings for a dog to become pregnant.

In most cases the female will become pregnant, but it's not guaranteed.

Like humans, it is not guaranteed. Depends on the heat cycle.

If you get the female spayed in the next couple weeks, any pregnancy will be aborted and it will prevent any future incidents as well.

If they locked in the push-me-pull-me way and both had happy faces, your female is pregnant.
Puppies are wonderful. (he says with tongue in cheek after dealing with 5 litters since youth)
