Not always and most of the time not. Round and whipworms can be shed and go completely unnoticed unless they are mature adults. Once wormed, you can usually see them since they come out in 'bundles'. Tapeworms are visible, or rather their segments are. They look like pieces of string or white rice. Hookworms are the worst! They attach to the dogs intestines with mouthhooks and can cause severe anemia in your dog and you will never see one in their stool! Check your dogs gums, they should be healthy and pink. White or pale pink gums is a sign of worm infestation. Also if their belly gets distended and they groan when you push on it, it's a good sign of worms. A broad spectrum wormer is great but different worms require different wormers. Your vet can do a fecal inexpensively and see what worms your pup may have that way and give the proper meds to treat.

There are four primary types of intestinal worms found in dogs: 1) ROUNDWORMS are the most common and are often carried by a puppy from birth. These long, thin white worms may appear in the animal's feces (poop), and he may show signs of weight loss, dull coat, a hard round potbelly, and, in advanced stages, coughing. 2) TAPEWORMS are usually caused by ingesting fleas or flea larvae. These, too, can be seen in the animal's feces and look like moving pieces of rice. The dog may lose weight, have a dull coat and diarrhea. 3) HOOKWORMS are found in the soil. They get into the dog via his feet or through the belly and do not show up in the dog's feces. Signs are diarrhea, sometimes bloody, and weight loss. 4) WHIPWORMS do not show up in the dog's feces and signs of infestation are rare, except possibly bloody diarrhea. Although there are a number of over-the-counter de-wormers available, you should take a sample of your dog's poop to the vet and have it checked for worms. The vet will be able to advise you as to whether your dog has worms and, if so, the kind of medication needed to get rid of them. Also, you should keep your yard free of dog poop and make sure he doesn't have fleas. Keep in mind that a heavy infestation of worms can kill a dog, and some of them can be passed to people.

Sometimes you will see tapeworms which look like rice. And you can see roundworms which look like spaghetti. If they have roundworms, they belly will be distended. It will look skinny everywhere but the belly and the belly will be fat looking, but it is caused by the worms.
