My trainer said " What works for you.". I am left handed so trained my dog to walk & heel on my right.
The whole deal started with Hunting..What arm would you shoot with?

Left side for any competition purposes. I show dogs and even for a companion I would still teach her to heel on the left as that's what I'm used to.

Dogs are trained to heel on the left side. You have to be consistent with your dog or it will confuse him. Soon, he will just assume this position. Dogs like consistency.

Left side is usual but be consistant. If you decide to heel on the right, always do it on the right...otherwise you'll confuse the dog.

I trained police dogs for several years, they heal to the left . But personal dogs are also trained to the to the left side if you are right handed or the right side if you are left handed.

Left side, but unless you are interested in competition with your dog, it doesn't really matter. He can heel on whichever side you are more comfortable with.
Hope this helps!
