If a person needs to be on disability for whatever reason, no one should ever look down on them. I know someone who is on ss disability due to her bipolar disorder and that doesn't make her any less of a person. She has a disease that is not her fault and is unable to work because of that disease. You shouldn't care what others think, I know it's hard but try not to.
I have always dated people based on who they are not what they do for a living, so if a person is a terrific person I would most definitely go out with them.

I do not look down on anyone with a mental disorder of any kind; especially since I believe that we all have some kind of mental disorder to some degree.
Unfortunately, some of us become incapacitated by a mental disorder.
Mental diseases are some of the most debilitating diseases that mankind suffers and there are no cures.
The only thing that can be done is to try to bring the person back as close to the norm as possible.
During this period, the individual still needs everything that the so-called normal person needs...including money.
I don't have the resources to provide for this or any other person that needs to be provided for and I don't know what the rich are doing with all their wealth.
Knowing that a person suffers from a mental disorder of any kind, I would not date the person.
Unless it is a close family member or a person of prior friendship, the uncertainty of what the disorder could lead the person to do would prevent me from wanting to associate with him or her.
It seems to me that you already have some kind of relationship with this individual.
Only you know what you feel.
Be careful.

Just because someone has Bipolar Disorder doesn't mean that they should be looked down upon. I do think that getting involved with someone who has this disorder may cause you a great amount of emotional instability. The person with the disorder has their ups and down on a daily basis. They can be happy go lucky one minute and down and out the next. I think if you really really like this person proceed...but with extreme caution.

Being bipolar is a serious disorder that usually affects one's work abilities. If they cannot work because of this disease, how else will they survive except for social security? No offense, but shouldn't the fact that this person is bipolar be more of a concern than how they choose to support themselves?

If they have a legitimate problem that limits their earning potential for temporary periods, there is no disgrace in doing this. Each one of us pays into that system for that purpose and we have every right to withdraw it when needed. If you found someone with a good heart and personality, this is a small issue and it shouldn't bother you. If someone else, who is ignorant, tried to make it an issue, you would stand by your boyfriend...unless you are insecure.
But, bi-polar disorder and depression aren't excuses for not sticking to your goals. They are life's obstacles to those goals, but you have to face your demons and not label your condition. Labeling your condition just clouds the real issue.
