Definitely Hindi. It's one of the world's most widely--or intensively--spoken languages. That is, it's not spoken over such a wide geographic area as English or Spanish or maybe Arabic, but it's spoken by more people. It's the official language of India, but the country has MANY other languages and encourages them to flourish. Tamil is one such--a Dravidian language, whereas Hindi is Indo-European. Although Tamil isn't the most widely spoken of the Dravidian languages (Telugu is), it's the oldest and has the largest body of literature. I suppose that, if the southern (Dravidian-speaking ) part of India ever became a separate country, Tamil might be its official language.
