If the only baddies on your reports are the medical bills, you might want to go to the site I've listed and do some reading in the newbie forum first, then do some reading in the medical forum and the credit forum. Learn how to deal with them.

Everything on that site is free to read and use.

As for building up your credit, you really need a good mix of loans, major credit cards and store cards. Having just a couple of loans is not going to help build your scores that much.

You will see a small ding on your reports when you apply for credit. But within 6 months the ding barely counts and at 12 months it will not count at all.

Since you didn't say what your scores are, it's hard to say if you should try for the builder/rebuilder type of cards or go for something better.

You might do some reading in the credit forum in the site I've mentioned. There is a ton of threads about different cards listed in there. You can also look to the top right corner in the forums for CreditPulls and do some searching for credit companys that approve people with the scores you have.

make sure to pay all your bills on time. many phone companies, electric companies, etc. are now reporting payment histories, so even a late phone bill can drag your score down. do not apply for credit too often- too much credit, or too many applications can also pull your score down. Go with a large bank and open a savings account and make it a point to keep a balance, and add to it when you can. Make payment arrangements with your old medical bills. Even if its $25 a month- every bit helps- but once you make those arrangements, keep the payments up.. dont pay for a couple months and then stop. get a free copy of your credit report and make sure there are no false entries. It can take a little while, but you can always turn bad credit around- it just requires alot of patience and diligence.
