I like to be firm and semi strict with our 20 month old, but whenever we get into fights my husbands accuses me of being abusive and "beating" our kid which I dont.
I cant win.

Well, if you and your husband are having issues about it and you are getting in "fights" with your child... you may need to install a time out for both you and child. give yourself a break, make sure the child is in a safe place and take a 5 minute breather. I have a 23 month old and he can be fiesty, but he is a great kid and we don't fight. He gets a time out in his crib if he is out of control. Most the time he is out of control because he is so wound up from playing and is tired. Children that age start testing their parents but you must always stay in control, you of course have reasoning that the child does not.

Yes they can. It's kind of like when a baby cries when they don't want to go to bed or when they dont' get their way. That's there only way to say this is not happening.

Your probably a little too strict and your husband is probably the "cool" parent that lets anything go. You both need to meet somewhere in the middle and then he needs to support it.

Also, it's unhealthy for you to do all of the disciplining. Tell your husband to stop his complaining and get off of his butt and help you by doing the discipline some of the time. Hitting a kid at that age though isn't probably the thing to do if your doing that, but as they get older a swat on the butt never hurt anything. And if your husband doesn't start supporting you more, give him one too!

Yes a 20 month old can indeed. Infact a 3 month old can. My wife's daughter did so at 6 months old and it was OBVIOUS. I was feeding her some baby food (she had a strictly prescribed diet due to health problems). She bit down on the spoon and wouldn't let go. It was obvious she wanted to see what my reaction would be. When I smiled and laughed at her, she grinned and let go of the spoon....
