You can try these venues to see when their shows are:
LA Opera
http://www.losangelesopera.com/home/home.asp
Lyric Opera
http://www.lyricoperala.org/
Contemporary Opera of Los Angeles
http://www.contemporaryopera.com/
The Los Angeles Music Center
http://www.musiccenter.org/boxoffice.html
I'm not sure where you are, but if you happen to be closer to San Diego:
Lyric Opera San Diego
http://www.lyricoperasandiego.com/
SD Opera (not sure if they have shows on right now, but worth a look)
http://www.sdopera.com/
La Jolla Playhouse
http://www.lajollaplayhouse.com/
I have never been to an opera (only other types of shows), but hopefully you can find something that coincides with her birthday. Have fun.

LA opera does a great job and surprisingly enough the Long Beach Opera hired some new people and have been turning out great stuff. They most likely have websites or check in the Calendar sections of the Times, LA and OC Weekly.

Make sure you check out opera pacific. they are generally cheaper than LA Opera. www.Operapacific.com. They are at the Orange county performing arts center. Don't go to long beach opera, they are horrible. Crazy productions that are just bizzare. I would stick to either either LA opera or Opera Pacific. (LA opera is at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Downtown la)

"Carmen" by Bizet or "The Marriage of Figaro" music by Mozart, Libretto (text) by Lorenzo da Ponte. I have recently studied the plot of The Marriage of Figaro in musical/piano theory and I found it to be quite interesting. It's basically a satirical piece on the upper class that allowed Figaro, the clever servant of Count Almaviva, to outwit his master. It's an opera buffa, meaning Italian comic opera, that brought Italian opera to the peak of glory.

I don't know L.A. that much, but there must be a Los Angeles opera house. Call them and ask them which show she should see. Opera is cool. Good for her.
One of the people that I call a good friend was with the Lyric Opera here in Chicago he is very good and he is now with the Met. in New York, I miss him.
Enjoy ;

Carmen is probably one of the best 'introductory' operas. It is easy to understand, it is an exciting story, and the music is so wonderful. What a great gift to give your daughter.
Hope the two of you enjoy it!!
