You are supposed to be able to do it without inserting a finger into the rectum. You can find the enlarged sacs from the outside, and you simply squeeze them together, thereby forcing the vile liquid out of the anus. It's a disgusting thing to do, but it sometimes needs to be done. Vets say that a diet with bran, along with their regular food, prevents having to express. Try it, it worked for my Cocker Spaniel!
As to how long mini dachs live, you'll have to investigate on the net, or ask your vet, because I don't know that one.

No. Don't insert your finger. My Min Pin's anal glands got infected a while back even though it didn't look infected from the outside. Its very painful to them. Trust me, take it to the vet. Its a quick procedure and they'll be able to make sure there is no infection.

Usually, the anal glands express themselves when the dog poops, so something might be going on.

We have to do that to our Black Lab - male. It sprays right out and he apparently feels better for some time. However it isn't long before he needs it done again. I don't know the solution to the problem. My wife's grandmother breeds dogs and says she does it regularly and thinks nothing of it. I guess just get used to doing it. Good luck!

Have your vet show you how it's done. It's much easier than trying to describe it.

You have a lot of wonderful years left with your dachshund. My oldest one was 17 when he passed away.

The bestthing I would suggest is going to your vets and letting them do it and show you the correct way it should be done. Then you can do it again as needed.
