SOME DO BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS SAY YOUR FRIENDS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU AND SOME DON'T BECAUSE THEY REALLY LIKE YOU A LOT AND THEY WOULDN'T WANT TO BREAK YOUR HEART.

Maybe he just dates the ugly girl for sex, so their friends point out that she's not the one for him. He also sees no future being with her, like he's not getting married with her anyway.
Moreover, friends making such comments will bother him a lot, so it's not difficult to say goodbye to an ugly girlfriend. Girls like that are easy to find.
