It really depends on the circumstance that have caused you to be apart and how long that has been the case! If you have "family" that is willing to talk about him that is surely a good start. Knowing things like his date of birth and full name is just about a requirement as there are so many people with the same name. Before you start the search you should be very sure that you are ready to deal with any negative information that you are likely to find. I have done this for a number of people and always start with the social security death index. Again you need to be realistic that you are not going to like what you find. If you decide to go down this path start a note book about all of the information you find out and review it from time to time. Repeat Internet searches frequently on his name if you have that information. Once you have a name you can send e-mails to every body with that name that you can locate on the Internet (only if you are an adult or have permissions). Don't be surprised that he is not as interested as you might be to have a relationship.

Ask mom, or other family members.

Check with military records, if he was in the service.

Got a soc#? You may be able to trace him with that.

Switchboard.com (link below) will let you do a search for a person's name. Click the "Find a person" link near the top first, of course.

Or just google his name, if you have it.

Have you tried putting his full name in quotes and searching on the internet?
Have you asked relatives? Mother? Grandparents? Aunts & Uncles?
Go to Classmates.com and see if anyone remembers him.
If you gave more information we could help more.
