he won it in ufc 46 from matt hughes,but then gave the title up...WHY???

He thought he'd get better money in K-1 fights. He agreed to fight in a K-1 match even though the UFC told him no, so they dropped him and he said he'd never fight for them again. Guess, he ran out of money.

He didn't give it up. Penn signed with K1 and that was against UFC rules so Dana dropped him.

i heard he won it and then gave it to hughes cuz he knew hughs was the better fighter even though he beat him and he was also getting old

i think cuz he just wanted to win it. just to prove to himself and others around the wrold that he still have what it takes in him.
just like frank shamrock. he won then retired cuz he did everything.
