Have you ever lived without a television, a radio, without music done electronically, with out a BOOK? If you can imagine a life without these things, you can well imagine that you will value the words of the story teller. You would be able to tell, after a while, if you are listening to a fable, or if you are listening to the words of some eye-witness to a disaster, or someone who is repeating something they heard.
You get together and debate, ask questions, re-hear the story. The word "gospel" means "good news". In other words, for a long time, it was the story spread from village to village by trusted people.

Hi, as you study these great men you should pray before you start and ask God to reveal His truth about them to you. This will be then revelation knowledge. To have this you will know that these men did exist, you may not be able to convince any body eles but your knowledge on the subject may be enough for another person to ask how do you know this or they may think that you must of had some divine intervention to know so strongly about someone that lived back then. Remember that it's God's job to make sure that you know for sure and if you read about them believing only and expect God to interven He will and you will then know what I am talking about, It's not hard but worth the effort. Reading the bible with revelation knowledge is how you will get to know God and His ways. Why He did what He did and why He does what He does.Revelation knowledge is knowing what's behind what is written the deeper meaning to what it is being said.

Your references to the Old Testament stories are pretty accurate. However, Mohammed's sayings were gathere only about 30 years after he died. (Date of death: 632 A.D./C.E.)
If you treat the bible as a history or science book, you're going to find a lot of folks to argue with you. If you treat it as an inspiration on how to live, then you can let go the literal stories and look for other meaning. If you believe that the Noah story is about a literal murder of millions of people, God looks harsh. If on the other hand you look at it in an allegorical sense, then God looks more like one who can start over, as can we all. In the allegory, no one dies. Fundamentalists are left with a God who seems like an emotional steam roller, similar to Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction."

Depends on which "Theologins" you ask. Most biblical scholars believe that both David & Solomon wrote their own books; same for Ruth & Job (which is interesting because Job was one of the first books written & he actually mentions a type of dinosaur in his writing).
Also, the four Gospels are attributed to their own writers, in most circles.
As I said, it depends on who's giving the opinion.

The Bible was never meant to be history. It is theology. It tells stories that illustrate the writer's understanding of God. The writer was not writing a history book. The writer was using rhetoric to persuade us to look deeper into our faith.

You have the choice to accept or deny the Bible. Those of us who believe cannot be persuaded by your tentative arguments. We began our belief in the Lord, not by reading the Bible, but by feeling His presence. We read the Bible after we developed our faith in the Lord. The Holy Spirit helps us identify the Truth and understand what we read.

your "facts" are incorrect...Obviously Moses penned his own story because he wrote Exodus - which is about the bulk of his life story. Moses wrote about Abraham and Noah under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who witnessed their lives first hand...

A person can believe because of faith, I don't understand why people feel the need to analyze everything they don't get it right. Why is this stuff important, it is by sight that you see, and faith that you believe. It is simple.

this is where faith comes in. don't forget that all these texts have been translated again and again. you know mistakes have been made. you ultimately have to decide for yourself what to believe. i believe, just not in all the things a preacher might tell me to believe.
