I witnessed first hand where my friend's mother got so angry after an argument, she forgot which guests she had at her home and pulled out the biggest kitchen knife to corner my friend. We were all so freaked out. Her dad wrestled the knife away, and begged us not to call the cops. What could cause such a rage induced episode? My friend was tramautized by the event but says that this is not unusual in her home.

Hard to say.
If I try to imagine what would make me do that I think I'd be feeling helpless with no control of the situation. With no control, I'd feel cornered and even threatened on some level. People around me are pushing me more, asking questions, not stopping or letting up, frustration begins to blossom until I want to lash out. Lash out to defend myself, lash out to 'just make them shut up', lash out because I'm screaming inside to be understood and listened to and obeyed. I've never felt in control in my life, masking my insecurities with rudeness and brashness to .. just... keep... them... away.

If she acted that way while you were there, can you imagine what she's like when no one is there? Or what happens if your friends dad isn't there next time? I don't know how old your friend is, but you need to talk to her about getting help. Sometimes when people live in abusive homes, they don't realize that there's a better way. I would also consider reporting that woman because you'll feel awful guilty if something terrible were to happen and you didn't do something to stop it when you had the chance.

Since you witnessed this first-hand; you really need to call child-protective services if the friend is a minor; and/or the police department.
Don't be afraid to ask for help for your friend. Your friend is obviously scared; and the father is HIDING the mothers' problem; when he should be getting her help.

This rage will only escalate. Your friend could end up dead. Then will YOU feel guilty because you DIDN'T call someone ?? You may very well stop someone from getting hurt or killed. Talk to your school counselor, also.

If you or one of the other guest had reported it to the police they would have probably insisted she go for Anger Management classes. Some people have deep anger that causes violence and they, themselves dont realize that there are underlying causes that need to be dealt with. Someone that cares about her should see that she gets help.

I would still report the incident to the police. Your friend is probably experiencing or will experience post traumatic stress disorder... her dad sounds like an enabler. That mom has serious issues and needs help.

Sounds to me like she has some psychological issues that definitely need to be dealt with before said person actually inflicts bodily harm on your friend. She is sick and needs help. I wouldn't ignore this--it won't go away on its own. She needs help and NOW. You need to get the police involved. I hate to say this, but it needs to be said--If you don't intervene now, the next phone call will be to the morgue to pick up your dead friend.
