I came home 2 nights ago to find that my birdys mught have went wild in the cage at night (maybe one of them feel, they heard some noise or whatever, it happens) and I wasn't there to turn on the lights, let them out and calm them down because I was at the airport picking family up. Anyways, my oldest male had some blood on the bottom side wing part and it was dry, so we just let it be because he flew fine and semmed normal.

For 2 days, he has been sleeping most of the day. He flies fine and eats and drinks normaly. He just sleeps too much. I thought it was lack of sleep, so I put them in a bit earlier last night, but he slept for about 2 hours now. He is NEVER like this. He is such a people bird. He yells, flies around and cannot be without the hen. Right now, it's like he just doesn't care about ANYTHING. He just went into his cage and even with the lights on, tucked his head back and is sleeping!

He never really lets anyone pet him, but now he even let me pet him more than once!

What can be wrong with him???
He is not even a "shy" bird right now, he just sits there all puffed up and ready to sleep!

I will go to the vet on Monday, but until then...what shaould I do!?!

Thanks a lot!

Cockatiels are prone to "night frights". Wild thrashing about when scared at night in the dark. It sounds like he broke a blood feather, which is a new feather that is coming in. It has a blood supply. When broken, it can bleed a lot, and the bird can lose a critical amount of blood. Let him sleep and keep him warm and quiet. If the bleeding has stopped for sure, and he is eating well and drinking, just let him rest. On monday take him to the vet to have the broken feather removed. Keep a night lite on at night which can help reduce the night frights.

When birds seem ill it is already serious. Birds hide sickness until they are almost dead sometimes.

If it is a blood feather (blood red by the body while first growing), you need to yank it out and have some powder from the pet store to stop bleeding.

Visine for your eyes will stop bleeding in a pinch.

If it is JUST blood loss, he stopped bleeding (feather HAS to be pulled because they start bleeding again a lot of times) give him lots of liquids and treats to make up some more blood.

Your vet is always the best if you really treasure this bird. Since you have another, many times the other will pull the broken blood feather.

If you do it, take needle nose pliers and give it a sharp jerk in the direction it is growing out but DO NOT crush it with too much pressure on the pliers. YOU'LL HAVE to have the septic powder to stop the bleeding again.

i think that they fall down when they sleep cuz same happened to mine they were all screaming and flight around the cage in the middle of the night so i get up and turned on the light and found one of them with blood in her wing i grab her but her wing was o.k next day she acted normal and she's been o.k.BUT YOU SHOULD TAKE IT TO THE VET, MEANWHILE TRY TO PET HIM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN SO YOU CAN KEEP HIM ACTIVE AND HE DOESN'T FALL ASLEEP
