i need either sour cream or "heavy whipping cream" for a recipe.....what can I use to replace it? i only need like 1/2 cup.

Plain yogurt works well (depending on what the recipe is). good luck!

Sour Cream: 1 cup of cottage cheese blended with 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, or 1 cup of yogurt equals 1 cup of sour cream.

1 cup sour cream can be substituted with

- 1 cup plain yogurt or :

- 3/4 cup sour milk, buttermilk or plain yogurt + 1/3 cup melted butter or :

- 1 cup crème fraîche or :

- 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar plus enough whole milk to fill 1 cup (let stand 5-10 minutes)

You could use Cool Whip, or plain yogurt. I use plain yogurt, instead of sour cream, all the time.

SOUR CREAM SUBSTITUTE

1/4 c. non fat milk powder
1/2 c. cold water
8 oz. uncreamed cottage cheese
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. salt

Mix together milk and water and blend well with cottage cheese. Mix in lemon juice and salt. Keep refrigerated until needed.
