Dementia pugilistica, also called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, pugilistic Parkinson's syndrome, boxer's syndrome, and punch-drunk syndrome, is a neurological disorder which affects career boxers and others who receive multiple dazing blows to the head. The condition develops over a period of years, with the average time of onset being about 16 years after the start of a career in boxing.

The condition, which occurs in people who have suffered multiple concussions, commonly manifests as dementia, or declining mental ability, and parkinsonism, or tremors and lack of coordination. It can also cause unsteady gait, inappropriate behavior, and speech problems.

It is not well understood why this syndrome occurs (Drake and Cifu, 2004). Loss of neurons, scarring of brain tissue, collection of proteinaceous plaques, and damage to the cerebellum are implicated in the syndrome, which may be etiologically related to Alzheimer's disease (Graham and Gennareli, 2000).

Famous sufferers include Joe Louis, Beau Jack and, more recently, Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry, Mike Quarry, Wilfredo Benitez, and Freddie Roach.

Yes! Think about it. Do you think getting hit in the head over and over is good for the brain? No! Yes, brain damage is common in boxing.

Yes. Punches to the head scrambles your brain. Its like shaking an egg, when a punch hits your head your brain is hitting the inside of your skull with the force estimated at approximately 3G's. That damages your ability to talk and mentally function.

I don't know. Can you really get brain damage from pounding your head on the sidewalk?

So, how long have you been boxing?

Yes you can without a doubt. Trauma from your brain being hit against your skull results in injury and therefore damage.

Yes. Getting pummelled on a daily basis has got to knock something out of kilter sooner or latter. I love Mohammad Ali, but I think his boxing has messed up his health to a big extent.

Yes, it is a weird thing, but it only can happen if you get hit in the jaw. The jaw is the bone that partly protects the brain, and is not as strong as your skull. But you cannot get it from just being hit in the skull.
